Chapter 89
“All rooms?” Clara asked. “In a palace like this? Every single room is booked for the next three months. And you are so certain you don’t need to check.”
The Head Maid lowered her head. “I’m telling you that, yes. In fact, there aren’t enough supplies for an event either, we are already holding so many.”
“And you can’t just order more?” Clara asked.
“Clara,” I said.
“No, Lily. She’s giving us the runaround. That can’t be right.”
“Clara, it’s okay.”
“It isn’t.”
“Clara,” I said, a bit more firmly.
She was clearly exasperated, looking from the Head Maid to me with an incredulous expression. But, this time, when I gestured back into the hallway, she followed, albeit with a sigh of annoyance.
“This isn’t right,” Clara said.
“It’s not her fault,” I said. “Someone is putting her up to this.”
Clara huffed. “This has Ophelia’s fingerprints all over it. I’m going to give her a piece of mind.”
“Don’t,” I said quickly, stopping her before she could walk off. “That won’t solve anything. What I need to do is think of something else, something Ophelia wouldn’t expect and couldn’t know to interfere with.”
“That shouldn’t be hard for you,” said a male voice from behind us.
I nearly jumped out of my skin, but relaxed when I saw it was only Benedict lounging on a windowsill, holding a book. He snapped it closed and hopped down to his feet.
“You two really should be more careful where you have your private conversations,” he scolded lightly, with a
smile.
Clara bowed her head slightly with reverence, Benedict mostly ignored her, other than to give her a small passing smile, before looking at me.
“The Queen ordered you to hold an event, right? But the court is interfering, because you are on the outs again,”
he said.
“You know a lot,” Clara muttered.
Benedict shrugged. “I pay attention. You need something that they can’t anticipate and stop. That should be easy for you, as I was saying.”
“How do you mean?” I asked him.
“Tea parties. Brunches. That’s all they ever think about, because that’s all they’ve ever known,” Benedict said. ” Your greatest strength, Lily, is that you aren’t like them. You are a unique woman from the outside world. Instead of trying to conform to their expectations, you should drag them out of their comfort zone. Bring them into your world. Your life. What you enjoy doing.”

I considered it. That wouldn’t work… would it?
But the more I thought about it, the more I looked at Benedict’s encouraging smile, and even Clara’s spark of interest, the more I began to realize that taking a chance was exactly what I needed to do to survive the palace and the court.
“I have an idea,” I said.
“I love it already,” Benedict said. “What is it?”
“The event will be held in the training grounds.”
Clara’s brows rose high. Benedict laughed, and touched my shoulder. “I knew you could do it.’
Grayson’s POV
Lillian had been avoiding me. She had reason to, and I’d been giving her space. But her absence was starting to be irritatingly noticeable. To solve that absence, I went searching for her.
It wouldn’t do to have her mopping miserably around the halls.
Yet, when I finally tracked her down, I spotted her with my uncle Benedict and Clara. The three were smiling and laughing, with even Lillian speaking animatedly. More so than she had ever done around me.
Benedict had his hand on her shoulder. She was smiling at him.
A lead weight formed in my stomach.
Without a word, I left them to their business to attend to my own, while my wolf growled lowly inside of me.
