Chapter 90

Lillian’s POV

After that, Benedict started helping Clara and I, which both Clara and I were slightly suspicious of. I didn’t think his help would last long before he fluttered off to something that amused him more than this did, but to my surprise, he stuck around much longer than I thought he would.

He even offered to help Clara and me with the invitations, and once they were made, personally took half of them to hand-deliver. Clara took the other half. We’d all decided, given Ophelia’s interference with the Head Maid, that none of the servants could be fully trusted to help me.

When they returned, I was no less surprised.

“Everyone wants to come,” Clara said, smiling wide.

“Mine too,” Benedict said. “Every woman I spoke to was beyond intrigued about the event. The training grounds They can’t wait to see what it’s about.

“You’ve built up a buzz,” Clara added.

“And for good reason,” Benedict added. “Many of the ladies here have done all of the traditional things to death. The regular social parties are stifling and boring. I knew you could add some excitement to them, by putting in your own ideas.” He smiled. “So far you’ve knocked this out of the park.”

It was difficult not to return his smile. “I still have to run a successful event;” I reminded him.

“Child’s play. You have this in the bag,”

“You are going to do great,” Clara added.

I wanted to believe them, so excitement filled me and stayed with me as I left them. I had some plans under my arm, some last minute things to go over. I wanted to write down what I would say, how I wanted to instruct, and what I could counter with if anyone tried to argue. Planning it in advance might help me in the moment.

I returned to Grayson’s bedroom late in the evening, my plans under my arm. I’d hoped, arriving late, he already be in bed. Instead, he was at the desk, locked into his own work. As I entered the room, he turned and looked at me.

I paused.

A moment passed. Nothing was said, we just looked at each other. He opened his mouth like he might say something to me. But then he closed it and looked down.

Swallowing down the rising hurt, I made sure the door was closed and crossed the room. I left my plans on top of the dresser as I retrieved some sleep clothes and retreated into the bathroom to ready for bed. When I was ready, I reemerged, grabbed the plans, and going to my side of the bed, sat on top of the covers with my papers and pen. I continued scribbling down notes.

Grayson glanced back at me three separate times. I knew because I was oddly aware of him, even as I tried to ignore him. But he never said anything, and neither did I. The air between us was chill, and I frowned deeply, hating it.

I tried to focus on my work, but it was hard for my thoughts not to linger.

In choosing to protect Ophelia, he was leaving me at risk. Despite all the things we’ve done, he clearly did not care for me at all. He was on Ophelia’s side, and I was truly alone in all things. He wasn’t an ally. Maybe he never had been. I’d been such a fool to think otherwise, even if only for a moment.

Freshly annoyed with myself, I forced my thoughts back onto my paperwork and on tomorrow’s event.

Minutes turned into an hour, and my eyelids started to grow increasingly heavy. My eyes stayed closed each time I blinked until I blinked and the lights were out. Early dawn light was creeping in through the window.
