Chapter 80

Lillian’s POV

Grayson spared only a moment to look at me, his gaze doing a quick once over my body. When he saw the state of my skirt, he growled, then turned to face the attackers.

Some were smart and turned to flee: Others, much less so. The two rogues lunged forward first, attack as one, but Grayson made short work of them, snacking their necks in much the same way as he had the first, before tossing their bodies aside like ragdolls.

The guards hesitated, but then bolted forward. Their heavy armor granted them more protection, but Grayson was ruthless as a wolf, moving faster than they could see, and was much stronger than they expected, pulling off limbs or checking one so hard, he flew into the trunk of a tree, shattering it straight through. The tree toppled down on top of him, crushing what was left of his body.

Watching this carnage was like nothing I had ever seen before, almost beautiful in its deadliness. Grayson moved as smoothly as if he was dancing, brutally, ruthlessly. Leaving none alive except those who escaped him.

When they were dead, he scented the air, as if checking for more. Then shifting back into his human form, he approached me. He was covered in blood, but I didn’t care, didn’t shy away as he wrapped me in his arms and buried his face in my neck.

This man saved my life. He had no reason to, but he came all the same.

I held him back, just as fiercely as he was holding me. “Thank you,” I whispered. “Grayson…”

“No one will take you from me,” he growled lowly, possessively, as he nosed at my neck, at the mark he had made, the mark that pulsed now from the bond blooming between us. “Did they hurt you?”

“They wanted to,” I said.

He growled again.

“You arrived in time,” I told him quickly, to assuage him. “I’m not hurt.”

“You are frightened. I can smell your fear. Feel it.’

“I’ll be okay now,” I said. “I’m safe with you.”

“Yes,” he said and held me.

We were only alone for a moment before Prime Beta appeared from the brush. He looked around coolly, but did not seem overly affected by anything he saw. “Others are coming/ We have to move quickly to hide this mess.”

He moved at once to one of the fallen attackers. Pulling back the guard’s helmet, he paused, but only briefly. Whatever he saw must have been nothing, because a moment later, Prime Beta was lifting the body to move it.

Grayson lifted his head again, scenting. “We don’t have time. They are almost here.”

“If they see what you’ve done, they’ll know you are healthy,” I said quickly.

“They won’t,” Prime Beta said. He tossed the body he was holding aside, then reached for another. From the wound he pressed his fingers into the blood, then started leaving splotches on himself.

“I don’t understand.”

“Let us do the talking,” Grayson said. “Say nothing.”

No sooner had I, then Clara appeared with reinforcements behind her. My heart warmed for this friendship, for knowing she came back for me. Even if it would have been too late, to know that she made the attempt marked her as a true friend. I wouldn’t doubt her again.

Behind the reinforcements was a crowd. I didn’t know what Clara had said to get these guards to follow her, but it must have been enough to draw the eye of the others.

A few, seeing the carnage, gasped in horror, with one covering his eyes. Several walked away. One threw up in a bush.

A few of stronger stuff stepped forward. They looked around, and then at Grayson.

“My prince… did you do all this?” asked one, a bolder member of court.

“Could you have recovered in such time?”

“Some of these kills would have required such strength…”

“It wasn’t my prince,” Prime Beta said. “Most of these kills are mine. The prince detected his mate in danger through the bond and pushed his body hard. Fortunately, I saw his reaction and followed. I was able to fight the lot while he protected the Luna Princess.”
