Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 81

Chapter 81

The crowd looked at each other, and some of them nodded. No one else spoke up.

“I’m tired now, and my mate is frightened,” Grayson said. He added some breathiness to his voice, making it seem weaker than it truly was. “Lillian, please help me return to our rooms. We must rest.”

“Yes, my mate,” I said, playing my part.

Grayson glanced at me a moment giving an unreadable expression, then he looked back to Beta. “Have this cleaned up, and then you’ve earned a break.”

“Yes, Alpha. Thank you, Alpha.”

Grayson made a show of leaning on me as we stood up. Holding him around the waist, I pretended to help him as she shuffled back toward home.

When we were out of earshot and slightly, he turned to me and pressed a kiss into my hair. As quick as he had done it, he finished, making me wonder if I had imagined it.

Even as my heart soared.

Ophelia’s POV

My brother gave the order for the arriving guards to clean up the mess. Then, before they had even started, he made a b-line to me, took me by the arm, and dragged me further into the forest.

“Let me go,” I snapped when we were far enough away to not be overheard by any eavesdroppers. “What is the meaning of this manhandling? I’m your sister, not some common criminal.”

“I’m not so sure anymore,” my brother said. The blood on him seemed unnaturally placed, but I hardly had time to consider that now, when he was looking at me with such suspicions in his eyes.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“I started moving the guards,” he said. “I took off a helmet. He was not one of the men assigned to protect the

Luna Princess.”

“So what?”

“I recognized him all the same,” my brother said. “He was one of yours.”

“A turncoat then,” I lied. “Better to be rid of him before he tried to kill me.’

My brother narrowed his eyes. I had seen him interrogate before, at Grayson’s command, in the throne room for punishments with all of the room watching. But I never expected to be on the receiving end of such cold and calculating glances.

“I am your sister,” I said.

“If you had anything to do with this…”

“I don’t,” I insisted, lying through my teeth. My brother was good at detecting lies, but I prided myself in being just as good at giving them. I was not going to be called out by him, or by anyone.

Yes, this plan had failed, but this hadn’t been my only plan, just the most obvious. I could hardly act, however, with my brother breathing down my neck.

“That you would even consider me for this is an insult,” I said. “I don’t like the Luna Princess, yes. Sure. I wish she was gone. But I wouldn’t kill her.”

“Prince Grayson wishes her to be at his side,” my brother said, his voice pitching lower. “You will stay away from her. You will stop this line of thinking that she needs to be gone. Or you will have an enemy in me.”

“That’s how it is, then? You’d pick some stranger over family?”

“My loyalty is to my prince,” my brother said. “As yours should be.’

With that, he turned and walked away from me, strutting like he had delivered some grand address.

He wanted to make an enemy out of me? Fine. I didn’t need to prove anything to him.

That harlot was making Grayson’s life worse, and now, by extension, that was even extending to my brother.

He thought to convince me to leave her alone?

He just did the opposite.

I would save Grayson and my brother from Lillian’s clutches. If it was the last thing I ever did.
