Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 79

Chapter 79

Lillian’s POV

Clara and I made a mad dash for our lives, pushing into the forest. We could have been running away from safety. Maybe it would have been better to run back into the crowd. But with my own guards turning against me, I had no idea who I could trust.

Glancing behind me, I noticed all the guards and rogues focusing on me. Clara and I were keeping distance for now, but that wasn’t going to last. Clara was already starting to wane. She didn’t seem like a fighter, but more like a noble who had been trained for diplomacy and fancy dinners.

But if the guards weren’t looking at her, if they were looking at me, then maybe I could help her get away. She had tried to give me warning. Without it, the guards could have killed me at any time and I wouldn’t have suspecteda thing until it was too late.

“Split up,” I called to her.

She looked at me in surprise.

“We can’t take them all. Split and run back toward the event,” I said, panting as I ran.

She nodded. “You too?”

“I’ll take a different way,” I said, lying. I already knew none of the guards or rogues would follow her. She would be safe, so long as I kept leading them away.

So many things had been out of my control since arriving at the palace, since being chosen as Luna Princess. But this, this selfless sacrifice. I could choose this. I could save my friend.

“Now!” I shouted.

Clara veered to the right, I veered left.

After a few paces, I checked behind me.

Yes, all of the guards and the rogues followed me, just as I’d suspected.

This was good. I could save my friend.

The problem was that I didn’t want to die. I had been trained to fight, but I had no weapon. Even if I did, I couldn’t possibly fight them all, not without some stealthy maneuvering and secrecy. Running through the forest in my court dress, I had neither of those things. I didn’t even have a bow to try to pick them off from a distance.

I was alone, and facing the end.

I wasn’t ready.

My heart, unbidden, called out.

Grayson.

Help me.

Please!

I pushed down those pleas, reminding myself that Grayson hated me now. He thought I betrayed him. Even if he could hear my calls through our bond, which, seemed like a longshot given he had only marked me out of duty not

affection, he had no obligation to answer.

He’d probably be just as happy if I were to meet my end. He might even cheer for it.

Would they even have a funeral?

Even so…

My heart continued to beg, whispering treacherous and lonely things like, I wish I could see you again, once more,

before the end.

Grayson…

Grayson’s POV

“We’ve missed out on so much time since your attack,” Ophelia continued. “We both deserve to catch up.”

My mind reeled with gentle ways of turning her down. I had no desire to rehash any old memories, especially when I was still feeling so utterly betrayed by Lillian.

“I have to return to -”

Grayson.

Help me.

Please!

I spun around, looking for Lillian in the crowd. She wasn’t around me, yet I had heard her as clearly as if she had just been standing next to me.

“What is it?” Ophelia asked, looking too, though she couldn’t know what I was searching for. What I had heard.

I had read about this. All werewolves had to research mating bonds, especially Alphas who felt the bond the most keenly. I had marked Lillian, and now I could… feel her. But only in moments of high emotion. High stress. High

fear.

Her voice had been trembling, panting. Had she been running?

I wish I could see you again, once more, before the end.

Grayson…

Stricken, I was frozen for only the length of two heartbeats. Long enough for Ophelia to say, “I don’t -”

Then I started running. I didn’t know where I was going exactly, but my heart was leading me to the forest. Fortunately, as close as we already were to the trees, I didn’t think too many people had seen me racing at full speed toward the trees, when I was supposed to be weak.

The minute I cleared the tree line, I shifted and took off as fast as I could, following the bond.

I could almost feel Lillian’s racing heartbeat, echoing in the shadow of my own. In some sense, they seemed to pound almost as one.

I didn’t have time to deal with that.

I pushed my legs hard, as fast as I could go, pushing with all of my Alpha strength and speed.

Hold on, Lily.

I’m coming.

Don’t you dare die!

Whatever anger I had toward her evaporated. She wouldn’t die here in this forest. I wouldn’t let her.

She was mine. Who would try to take her from me?

Dead men walking, that was who.

No one took what was mine.

Lillian’s POV

I was pushing myself, but I was out of practice for running. Before long, the attackers were closing in. One reached for me, caught the back of my skirt, and I toppled forward.

My skirt tore as I fell face first into the dirt. At once, I pushed myself back up, turning, ready to fight. Even with my skirt in tatters, my panties exposed, I wasn’t going down without a fight. If they thought this would be an easy kill, they would have another thing coming!

One reached for me, and I shot my fist out, hitting him straight in the jugular. He stumbled back, coughing.

“Watch this bitch!” shouted another one.

“Don’t play nice,” said a third, holding their sword at the ready. “We were told to kill her. No one said it had to be clean.”

“I’d rather have some fun first,” said one of the rogues, checking out my legs.

My stomach flipped.

No way that was happening. They’d have to kill me first.

The guards moved, fully surrounding me.

“Why are you doing this?” I demanded, speaking more to the guards than the rogues. “I am your Luna Princess. Have you no loyalty?”

That didn’t seem to affect them. They stepped closer.

“Whatever Ophelia is paying you, I can pay double!” I tried.

No effect. Another step closer.

“I’m Luna Princess. Let me go and I can give you wealth and power!”

They didn’t believe me.

Weapons raised, they were nearly close enough to strike.

I held up my hands, but I was weaponless. My arms wouldn’t do much against swords.

I braced myself for what was coming. It was inevitable now.

I’m so sorry, Ronan.

My heart thundered faster, moving at a rhythm that didn’t feel like my own. Almost as if it was someone else’s. But how could that be? That wasn’t possible.

Then, in the distance, a howl, coming closer at breakneck speed.

The guards turned, but one of the rogues didn’t care. Seeing my surprise, he lunged at me, knife first.

A massive wolf appeared as if out of nowhere. He grabbed the rogue by the neck, snapped it, then tossed the corpse aside, all before landing on his feet in front of me.

I knew those eyes, that fur, though his manifested wolf was never this massive.

Grayson.
