Chapter 73
I’d had plenty of lovers, but no one has ever affected me this way. It had to be the mating bond messing with my head, making me desire things that were unnatural to me.
Yet.
As she focused on the wolf, I allowed my gaze to shift down her body, remembering the perfect curves she kept hidden under her clothes. Before the lust could take over though, my gaze dropped to her hands, scratching through my wolf’s manifested fur.
A flash of jealousy startled me. What did I care if she was touching my wolf? We were one in the same. But I couldn’t feel what she was doing, and I wanted to. I wanted her to comb those same fingers through my hair, to bring me a comfort I had never been allowed to feel in this life.
A prince wasn’t made for soft touches. Yet, with Lillian, I craved.
The hurt in her eyes kept me at bay. I’d already said I didn’t want to touch her. I couldn’t go against that now. A prince’s word was his truth.
I might have given Lillian the mating bite, but that didn’t make us mates.
Whatever these other feelings were, I could bury them.
Ophelia’s POV
I paced back and forth in my room, outraged by all that had occurred today.
One of my minions, Carol, was standing there obediently, watching as I walked back and forth. I’d already scolded her for trying to give advice. Like she would have anything worthwhile to say. Her father was a merchant, for Goddess’s sake. What could she know about the life of a noble, even if her father had been successful enough to bring her to court.
“This makes no sense,” I grumbled, not for the first time. “Grayson is awake. This should be the happiest day of my life. I should be picking out wedding dresses and making plans to become the Luna Princess.”
“He already has one of those…” Carol said.
I swiveled on my heel just to glower at her. “Yes. I know. Thank you for pointing that out, you imbecile.”
Carol lowered her head. “Sorry.”
“Why would he mark her? He said he was drawn by Mate’s Call, but that shouldn’t have happened with them. That wasn’t even a real heat for her! It was medically induced! She should be dead right now, not in the bed of the love of my life.”
Carol gasped. “Don’t say that.”
“It’s true,” I said. “I’ll say it as much as I pleased. She must have tricked him somehow, for him to pick her over me. To mark her over me. And did you see the way he dismissed me at the judgement?”
“It was very humiliating for you,” Carol said.
I glowered at her, and she lowered her head again. “Sorry.”
I shook my head. “I have left too much to chance with this. My servant was a good one, but I couldn’t guarantee some other Alpha would find her and mark her, even with Calvin chasing her around. He’s as incompetent as anyone I’d seen. Nearly as fool-headed as you are.”

“Sorry.”
“Stop apologizing,” I snapped.
“Sorry,” she said again.
I turned from her and walked to the fireplace just to watch the firewood pop and burn.
“I’m done playing nice,” I said. “It’s time I move forward with my plans to have Lillian killed.” I imagined Lillian’s body in there with the charcoal and flames, screaming for mercy.
Please, Ophelia. Forgive me!
Never, I would tell her. You have tried to take something from me that was never yours.
Grayson was, and always would be, mine.
