Chapter 74

Lillian’s POV

Grayson looked like he wanted to say more to me, but with a deep inhale, he looked away, saying nothing. Half my mind wished that I could read his thoughts, to know all that he was holding back. The other part of me was glad I couldn’t, suspecting that I would only be hurt again.

A knock on the door shattered the moment, and I was grateful for it.

Grayson looked at the door, and whatever he sensed had his features softening. He walked to the door and opened it, revealing Josephine on the other side. She was already crying, but seeing Grayson made her breakdown even

more.

She flung herself at him and he caught her quickly.

“I’m so sorry,” he said.

“Why are you apologizing?” she said.

“I left you alone.”

“It wasn’t your fault! You can’t apologize for being in a coma!” she pulled back enough to look up at him indignantly. I wondered, even if she knew the truth of the secrets he had kept from her, that she would still turn away any apology. She seemed as loyal to Grayson as I was to Ronan. If our roles had been reversed, I would have been much like her.

“Don’t let me apologize, fine,” Grayson said. “But at least know I will make this up to you.”

“Fine,” she grumbled, and hugged him again. Then she punched him on the arm. “Never do that again!”

He nodded.

I turned away, feeling like I was intruding on sibling moment that should have been private, but before long, Josephine was pushing her way further into the room, approaching me.

“Lily…” she said. “I am sorry to you.”

“I don’t need an apology.”

“I didn’t know what they were going to do to you until after I saw you off,” she said. “When I found out… I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t believe you were marked. I didn’t want to doubt you, but… we all thought Grayson was in a coma at that time.”

“It’s okay,” I said.

“It’s not,” she persisted. “I was such a coward, I stayed so far away, hiding when I should have been there with you to defend you.”

“There’s nothing you could have said,” I assured her. “No one believed my word over Ophelia’s. You would have only made yourself look badly.”

“Friends don’t care about reputations,” Josie said. “I was a coward and I failed you, and I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay, Josie,” I said. “Really.”

She frowned. “Promise?”

“I do,” I said.

“Friends again?”

“We never stopped being friends.”

“I didn’t want to doubt you,” she said in my ear. “I’m sorry, if even for a sliver of a second that I allowed myself. to.”

Josephine stayed with us for a time, laughing as she joked, but then souring as she explained to Grayson about what happened with her ex. He had to pretend like he didn’t know.

“I never liked him,” Grayson admitted, and Josephine smiled like that had lifted some weight off her chest.

“He was insufferable, wasn’t he?”

“The worst,” Grayson agreed.

As the day grew on, Josephine stood. “I suppose I should give you lovebirds some room. Lily, can I expect you for tea later?”

“I… no,” I said, frowning. “I don’t think I’m ready…”

“Say no more!” Josie said hastily. “Really! I don’t want to hear any sex stuff about my brother! Enjoy yourself! Or whatever, gross.”

Grayson rolled his eyes. “See you later, Josie.”

Josephine sneaked one last hug to Grayson on her way out. “I’m really glad you are awake.”

“Me, too,” he told her and saw her out.

When she was gone, with the door closed, he turned back to me.
