Chapter 59
“If you’ll please excuse me,” I said. “I think I need some air.”
“You alright?” Benedict asked, genuine concern on his face.
“I’m alright,” I told him. “Please, enjoy yourself. I’ll only be gone a minute.”
Benedict nodded, though the worry stayed on his face.
Turning away from them, I sought out a door to the balcony, breathing only as I stepped out into the cool night air. A few others were out here, including a couple holding each other, looking up at the stars.
I grabbed the railing with both hands and slunk against it, exhausted. I hadn’t been sleeping much, and all the pressure was wearing on me. Maybe I could speak to Josie after this, and she could help me arrange more time in my schedule for breathing. For minutes alone.
I wondered how she handled all the attention.
“Um, excuse me,” said a voice from beside me. I looked to see another servant there.
Gods, I’d only been alone for a minute. I pushed down my frustration though. I’d never take it out on a servant. She was only doing her job, what was expected of her.
“What is it?” I asked, trying to be calm and kind.
“The Queen is looking for you.”
Dread that had been slowly forming in the pit of my stomach now started crawling all the way up my throat.
How I wish I had some excuse to get out of this moment. Yet, I’d known all night this conversation would be coming. The Queen had warned me, demanded of me to become pregnant before this Ball, and I had not done so.
But I couldn’t just deny her summons. If I did that, it would only make everything worse. The best I could hope for was that the Queen would show some mercy, and perhaps I could convince her for more time.
“Where is she?” I asked.
“This way,” the servant said and led me down the length of the balcony to an outside stairwell that seemed to lead down into the gardens and the workshop outbuildings.
I hesitated on the stairs, glancing back up at the party-goers on the balcony. The way we were going seemed much too quiet.
“Are you sure about this?” I asked. “I thought I saw the Queen in the ballroom.”
“She wishes to have this conversation in private,” the servant said. “Away from the ears of curious guests.’
Yes, I supposed that made sense. There were too many guests here to make a scene in front of them, especially with the private business of making a child for her son.
Nodding, I continued to follow the servant further away from the event.
Maren’s POV
I hated Lillian. I always had, even since we were children and she was blessed with those bright eyes and pretty smile. But that hatred had only blossomed now.

Calvin was supposed to be mine, taken fair and square right out from under her nose.
Yet, while we were here, while she was Luna Princess, Calvin was acting like she was actual royalty. He was ignoring me, casting me aside, and chasing after Lillian.
Even now. Even out here outside the palace. After sneaking away from the guard who had kicked me from the ballroom, I had found solace in the gardens. I was waiting for the time to sneak back inside.
To my surprise, a servant was leading Lillian away, back towards some of the buildings in the back of the property. And following behind, likely to meet for some kind of romantic rendezvous, was Calvin.
Hot anger seared me. He was mine.
Who did she think she was, trying to take him from me?
They thought they could meet for a secret rendezvous? I wasn’t going to allow it. I was going to ruin Lillian once and for all.
