Chapter 58
Lillian’s POV

Before Maren’s hand could swing down to my face, a guard caught her arm, stilling her. I recognized this guard from around the palace. He was one of Grayson’s, likely keeping an eye on me per Grayson’s order. In doing so, he must have been ordered to intervene in the suspicion of possible harm to me.
Maren looked at the guard in shock. Calvin cursed under his breath.
The guard looked at me. “Luna Princess, is this person bothering you?”
“She is,” I said.
“Would you like me to remove her?”
“Yes,” I said.
The guard nodded. He grabbed Maren by the shoulders and steered her toward the exit. Maren looked wordlessly to Calvin for help, but he didn’t say a word, simply watching along with the rest of us as Maren was dragged away.
When she was far enough away, his gaze turned to me.
“No, I don’t wish to dance,” I told him, once and for all, and walked off.
I didn’t make it too far, though I had no end destination in mind, other than away from Calvin, before a servant stopped me.
“Forgive me, Luna Princess, but there are a group of Alphas waiting to speak with you.”
I bit back a heavy sigh. As Luna Princess, it was my duty to socialize, even if I’d much rather be a wallflower against a corner and not draw any attention to myself.
“Lead the way, please,” I told the servant, swallowing down my reservations. As we approached the group of waiting Alphas, I very nearly fell over in relief when I saw Benedict among them. He was already telling jokes, making them laugh.
Spotting me, he held out a hand. “Ah, there she is, the lady of the hour, Lily, please. Join us. Allow these men to see how beautiful you are, so they can see how well my nephew has done for himself.”
The men smiled at me kindly, none of them too uptight, unlike some of the other guests here. Still, I knew I had to be on guard. At these events, even kindness could be a manipulation.
All of this was so very exhausting. Though, at least they weren’t unfriendly. Making small talk out of nothing was the most difficult task. These men seemed eager to hold a conversation.
Though, quickly, they turned things around to ask after Grayson.
“Have you noticed any improvements in his condition?” asked one of the Alphas, “I’ve heard a rumor that things are looking up for him.”
Grayson hadn’t told me what to say when faced with this. What kind of rumor was this? Did Grayson know about it?
“The doctors would know more than me,” I said. “Though I do hope every day that his condition improves. I would like to know the man I am to mate with.”
“I can imagine that must be difficult,” said another.

The first remained persistent. “Yes, but have you noticed any change? You are with him all the time, aren’t you? If anyone would notice any improvement, it would be you.”
“I really couldn’t say,” I said. “He’s still unconscious, if that’s what you mean.”
“Yes, but is his color better? Has he stirred at all -”
“Jefferson, you are being too pushy,” Benedict said, stepping forward. “This is a party, not an interrogation, and the last time I checked, you aren’t the prince’s primary doctor.”
“No, but… well, we’ve all heard the rumors.”
“And until you are told otherwise, that’s all they are,” Benedict said. “Surely you have more tact than you are showing. Why would you risk upsetting the Luna Princess? You think she doesn’t want to see an improvement? She’s never even properly met him yet. Think for a minute man.”
The outspoken Alpha, Jefferson, lowered his head. “I’m sorry, Luna Princess. I didn’t mean any harm.”
“It’s alright,” I said. “But thank you for recognizing you pushed too far.”
He nodded.
I stayed with the Alphas for a few minutes more, as Benedict smoothly changed the subject. For a minute, I even had fun. But it didn’t last before I started to feel like I was suffocating under so many watchful eyes, all waiting for me to do something wrong.
