Chapter 51
Lillian’s POV
My breath caught.
The entire encounter with Calvin had left me unbalanced and shaken. Pressed against Grayson’s steady body, I could feel my own trembling. I hadn’t even noticed before,
I leaned into him without meaning to, finding strength in his steadiness. His arm around me was sturdy. His words… Gods, his words…
I wasn’t a thing that could belong to someone or be stolen, yet hearing Grayson speak of me like I was his made my heart race despite myself.
“I have guards keeping a close watch on Calvin,” Grayson went on. “And I also have my guards watching you.”
I stilled. Then, I backed away from him. “Me?”
“They are shadowing you for your own protection,” he said, looking at me. His gaze was steady, emotionless.
He didn’t seem angry, but I ached inside.
“You don’t trust me,” I said. “You want to monitor my movements.”
His gaze was unwavering, and his mouth stayed closed. He didn’t even try to deny it, and the longer the moment stretched without him saying anything, the more it hurt.
Even after everything, after my coming back, my saving him from the poison… He still doubted me. He still thought I would choose Calvin.
“Let me go,” I said, my hurt and anger hardening my voice.
He dropped his arm to his side, releasing me.
I couldn’t even bear to look at him. Turning, I walked away from him and straight out the door, not looking back.
Grayson’s POV
I’d upset her. That was clear from the pain in her eyes and the way she had retracted from me.
She’d accused me of not trusting her, but it was Calvin I didn’t trust. He had already tried to steal her away, and he would again. That he was suspicious of me only made everything worse.
I would keep an eye on Calvin, and an eye on her, whether she liked it or not. But why did it bother me so much that she was upset.
Lifting my hand which had just held her, her warmth still lingering on my skin, I frowned. Lillian was just an asset to me. A tool. A means to help keep my identity secret.
Why did I care at all what she thought?
Yet, as much as I wanted to deny it, I couldn’t deny that her irritation at me left me feeling… unpleasant. Slightly off-kilter, more than I wanted to admit.
Irritated by this whole ordeal, I walked across the room and wished, not for the first time that I wasn’t confined to this room. Was this why I was developing confusing feelings for Lillian? I’d just been cooped up too long?

I didn’t want to think about this anymore. I had actual threats around me. Someone had tried to poison me, for Goddess’s sake.
Ready to refocus on things that actually mattered, I summoned Prime Beta, and tried not to stew as I waited for him to arrive.
When he finally did, I jumped straight into work, thinking of anything but Lillian and the hurt look on her face.
“Tell me what’s being done with the maid who poisoned me.”
“She’s been contained,” Prime Bea said. “We’ve interrogated her, but for now, she refuses to give up Calvin’s involvement.”
I grunted unhappily. We’d already guessed Calvin was responsible, and Lillian confirmed it, having overheard his plans directly. We couldn’t act without proof though, and that meant a confession from his accomplice.
“A substantial amount of money was transferred into her personal accounts,” Beta said. “But it came from anonymous sources. There is no paper trail.”
“Keep trying with her until she gives up a name,” I said, “She’ll stay in a jail cell the rest of her life either way.” No one would be forgive for attempting to murder one of the royal family. “Make sure the guards are aware of their orders to watch Calvin. He will give something away eventually. He’s not clever enough to keep his plans hidden forever. And when he does, we will have our proof and can finally act against him.”
