Chapter 52

I sighed. “And I can get out of this room. Alert the doctor. It’s time to move forward with the plan. Have him leak that I may be on the verge of a miraculous recovery.”

“Yes, Sir,” Beta said, somewhat haltingly. I knew him well enough to know that he was holding something back.

“What is it?” I asked. “Is there something else?”

“Calvin may not be our only concern,” Beta said. “At least in regards to the Luna Princess’s protection.”

My blood turned to ice. “Someone else wants to harm her? Who?”

“Calvin’s fiancé. Lillian’s sister, Maren.”

I bit back a growl, but it came out of my wolf instead.

“No one will harm Lillian,” I said. “Keep an eye on this… Maren, as well.”

Lillian’s POV

I had stormed out of Grayson’s bedroom without any real plans on where I was going. Leaving so soon after Calvin also increased the risk that I would run into him, which I feared. But I was so tired, so upset, that I just couldn’t help myself.

Fortunately, the one who caught me in the hallway wasn’t Calvin – it was Princess Josephine.

“There you are! I was just about to go to Grayson’s looking for you,” she said. Approaching me, she hooked her arm through mine, and started dragging me toward one of the parlor rooms.

Other women were there, some playing card games, one on a piano. Several were sitting around small tables where tea was being served. Ophelia was there at one of the tables, as was Maren, who openly glared at me. Ophelia whispered something to her, and Maren looked away. Clara was there too, and offered a tiny smile to me before schooling her face once more.

Josephine dragged me to the couch. A tower of pastries was sat on a coffee table in front of it. As we sat, Josie ignored them all as she reached for a pile of letters instead, and passed them to me.

At first, I didn’t know why she had handed me these, but as I began to comb through them, I realized that all of these letters were addressed to me.

“I don’t understand,” I said. “What is all of this?”

“Invitations,” Josephine said. “Since the Moon-Blessed Hunt, all the ladies of court want you to attend their events. I think you are even more popular than I am.” She laughed. “Tea parties, brunches, dinners, dances… You are invited to them all.”

I was no closer to understanding. Yes, I had won the Hunt, but it had nearly cost me my life. Yet with these invitations, it seemed as if people had been impressed anyway.

Thinking back to the moment I chastised Maren in the throne room, the other court members had looked at me with respect. Was that because of the Hunt too?

All of this seemed so foreign to me. I was more used to being ignored and disliked.

“Do I attend them all?” I asked.

“Oh, gosh, no,” Josephine said. “If you tried that, you’d be so busy, your feet would fall off. Plus, some of these

are no doubt from unfavorable individuals hoping to improve their own station. Here, let me see. I’ll help you pick out the gems from the duds.”

Grateful for her help, I passed over the whole stack. She started opening them at once, and began separating them into three piles. Definite’s, definitely not’s, and maybe’s.

“Oh, this one will be fun! Maybe we can coordinate our outfits,” Josephine said excitedly, stirring my own excitement too.

She had a way of making me feel welcomed and accepted, like she was a real sister. The way sisters/should be.

At just that moment, hot tea poured down into my lap and I jumped to my feet in shock and to keep it from burning me.

Maren was there, empty tea cup outstretched over me, clearly the culprit.

“Oops,” she said, smirking, hatred burning in her eyes. “How clumsy of me.”
