Instead, I just felt sad.

Maren could have been my sister, a trustworthy ally. Instead, she hated me, now more than ever before/

She dropped to her knees but not without sending me a glare that would have murdered me if looks could kill.

Under the watchful eyes of the court, I felt safe enough to finally leave the throne room. My heart was in my throat, but not because of what happened with Maren. Instead, I was worried for Grayson.

For Calvin to assume that I had a backer, was he also suspecting that Grayson was the one supporting me? Either way, I didn’t want to keep anymore secrets from Grayson, especially where Calvin was concerned, so I hurried o speak with him.

Typically, Grayson could tell when I was coming and know that it was safe, that he didn’t have to hide that he was awake. Yet when I walked into the bedroom, Grayson was on the bed, as still as death, just as he had been the first

time I had ever seen him.

“There he is,” Calvin said from behind me. “Mr. Vegetable himself.”

Gasping, I turned around. “What are you doing here? Did you follow me?”

“I wanted to see the man that you were so fond of,” Calvin said. He pushed passed me, entering the room. He walked nearer Grayson but stopped when the spectral wolf at Grayson’s feet started growling. “I can look from here.”

“You can leave,” I said. “There’s no reason for you to be here. You aren’t welcome here.”

Calvin ignored me. “Gods, he looks dead, doesn’t he? No wonder you don’t want to screw him.”

My face burned hot. “You don’t know what you are talking about. You need to leave.”

“Can he even get it up when he’s like this?” Calvin asked.

In a flash, my anger rose more than my embarrassment. “Don’t talk about him like that.”

Calvin glanced at me. “Testy, aren’t you? You realize you don’t have to defend him. He can’t hear you.”

“He’s still a prince,” I said hastily. “He still deserves our respect.”

Calvin studied me closely before he looked back at Grayson. “You wouldn’t need to defend him… unless he’s really awake.”

Reaching forward, I grabbed Calvin by the arm and tried to drag him physically out of the room. Unfortunately, Calvin was physically stronger than me and didn’t move an inch no matter how hard I dragged him. “Get out, Calvin!”

Calvin ignored me. “He could be faking this… Is he the one supporting you?”

Grayson’s wolf growled louder, threateningly, rising up on its haunches. Calvin finally took a step backwards.

The wolf started to lunge, and Calvin, frightened, jump backwards, and fell on his backside. The wolf caught itself before actually leaping, but it did hop down from the bed to pace, growling, in front of Grayson’s bed.

The wolf was strong, but couldn’t speak. Towering over Calvin, I stepped into that role.

“You think he’s awake? There’s no way he would tolerate your disrespect if he was,” I said, lying, inwardly

amazed by Grayson’s restraint. “And his wolf… That it manifested outside of his body is proof that he’s really unconscious.”

In truth, Grayson was simply a powerful werewolf, perhaps the most powerful I had ever known.

Calvin looked from me to the wolf to Grayson on the bed. The wolf took a step toward him, taking point beside my leg. Calvin, intimidated by its closeness, backed up to the door, then in a rush, turned and ran through it.

I patted the wolf on the head, then moved to the door and closed it.

When I turned around again, Grayson was getting up.

Before I could say a word, he closed the distance, wrapped his arm around me, pulling me to his side, and said,” Calvin will not take you from me.”
