Chapter 49
Lillian’s POV
“I have no idea how you could have been chosen to be Luna Princess,” Maren continued. “A slut like you. The Prince’s wolf should have ripped you in half.” As she said those words, her lips twisted upward a little, like the idea of my brutal death pleased her.
We had never been close, but still, being confronted with her bloodlust was still shocking. I had never done anything to her, to my knowledge. She was the one who had been sleeping with the man I had thought I loved, betraying every sisterly bond that had ever been written.
She was one of the people who knew better than most that I had come here as a virgin. Yet here she was, calling me all manner of names implying the opposite. Was she attempting to destroy my reputation?
If we had been back in our home pack, maybe this would have worked. She was liked there, and I was quiet and an easy target.
But we weren’t within the walls of our pack anymore. We were in the Royal City. And I wasn’t just her sister anymore. I was a Luna Princess, soon to be the mother of the prince’s heir – theoretically, and as far as everyone other than Grayson and I were concerned.
Maren had no rights here, no hierarchy over me.
In fact, many of the gathered onlookers were looking at Maren like she was the one in the wrong.
This was so different than the norm I had been used to growing up that it took me a moment to realize it. Maren herself seemed oblivious. Calvin, glancing around, seemed to understand better. He was suddenly nervous, his hand moving from me to Maren’s shoulder.
“Calm down, Maren,” he said.
“She was trying to seduce you, Calvin. I can’t let her get away with that,” Maren snapped. “She needs to learn her place.”
“No,” I said loudly and clearly, “You need to learn yours, Maren.”
“You little -”
“Maren,” Calvin snapped, gripping her arm as tightly as he had gripped mine only a moment ago,
She finally silenced herself. Glancing around, I spotted the exact moment she realized the gathering crowd wasn’t looking at me with disdain, but at her instead. Unlike in our pack, she was lesser here. She was the one who should be groveling to me, not daring to mock me.
I held all the power here.
“You will not speak to me that way,” I said, loudly and clearly, as I made an effort to exude the kind of aura that I thought a royal would. I imagined myself like Grayson, standing here proudly, not allowing anyone to speak down to me. “I am Luna Princess, and you are a visitor here, a guest of an Alpha. Not even yet a Luna yourself.”
She paled. “Th-That’s only because no one here really knows you. Not like I do. You were never a kind of person that anyone would respect!”
Whispers started among the onlookers, but again, they looked at Maren with clear dislike. She was the outsider here, and well beneath me. Her hatred made her so blind, she couldn’t even see it.

“You will be silent and treat me with respect, or I will have you removed from the palace grounds,” I said.
“You can’t -” Maren started, but stopped as she saw the guards approaching us. What their actual intentions were, I wasn’t sure, but I was willing to use this to my advantage.
“I can and I will. Now…” I glanced around, growing bolder by the way the others were looking at me with acceptance. “Kneel, Maren.”
“Not to you!”
“Do it, Maren,” Calvin hissed. “You’ve made me look bad enough already.”
Maren glanced back at Calvin, and seeing his annoyance, some fear slipped over her face. Seeing that fear removed all pleasure from this moment. Maren had been the one that Calvin had claimed to choose, to want as his Luna, but she too knew to be afraid of him.
What went on between the two of them when no one was looking, I wondered. Maybe I should have felt vindicated.
