Chapter 154
Lillian’s POV
“This isn’t necessary,” Grayson said. “You are being too emotional about this. You are overreacting.”
“Stop saying that!” I snapped and pulled my arm away from his grasp. I continued packing, quicker than before. If I hadn’t been certain about leaving before, I was definitely sure now. My heart was an ice cube, my will cemented.
“Where will you go?” Grayson asked.
“Another room,” I said. “What does it matter to you?”
He fell silent.
I finished packing in the silence, then zipped my suitcase closed.
My cold heart ached. More than anything, I wished for him to try to stop me, but he only continued to stay silent. He didn’t say one more word, not as I pulled my suitcase off the bed, not as I carried it to the door, not as I drew that door open. Not even as I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.
In the hallway, holding my suitcase, the weight of what I was doing finally crashed into me.
I had wanted to hold Grayson close, I had even thought of giving him my virginity, and now, I was the one walking away. Tears welled, but I held them back. For now, I had to finish my purpose here and find a place to sleep.
I could find a place in the servants’ quarters, probably, but I wasn’t sure how that would reflect on Grayson. I didn’t want to hurt him. I just needed space.
The other reason I couldn’t go to the servants’ quarters was because I didn’t want to be alone. My thoughts were so loud, my heart splitting in half. My wolf was whimpering inside of me.
In this moment, I needed a friend.
I found myself standing in front of Josephine’s door, hoping that I wasn’t making a great mistake as I lifted my hand and knocked.
“Hold on! I’m coming!” Josie called from inside. Her footsteps bounded toward the door, and she opened it, a smile on her face. The moment she saw me, that smile fell. “Lillian? What’s wrong?”
Seeing a friendly face was all it took for the tears to spill from my eyes, the waterworks turned on that would not turn off again.
Josie didn’t hesitate. “Come in. Come on. I won’t have you crying in the hallway.”
She led me into her room and closed the door behind me.
“Leave your bag here. It’s okay. Come to the chair. I’ll get you a fuzzy blanket.”
I left my bag by the door and went to the comfortable plush chair she directed me to. The moment I sank into it, she rushed over to a chest and withdrew a warm, comfortable blanket. She returned with it at once and draped it around me.
“Tissues. We need tissues.”
She was off again, to the bathroom this time. She returned after a moment with a box of tissues which she also
gave me to me.

Then, pulling one of the other chairs closer, she sat, facing me, watching me, waiting for me to say something.
For a long time, I couldn’t say anything, just cry. Regret filled my heart, but so too did determination. This had to be done, hadn’t it? Grayson was being overbearing. He was making double standards without giving any leniency on his end.
After a while, when I’d cried myself out, used tissues around me on the floor, I calmed enough to tell Josie exactly what had happened with Grayson. She listened, her face twisting with disbelief and even outrage at some of the things Grayson had said. By the end, she was leaning forward, patting me gently on my knee.
“You two had a fight, it happens in every relationship. But don’t you see? The things he said… he was so jealous. And you are too. You only feel that way because you love each other.”
“No,” I said. “I’m losing him, Josie.”
“That’s not true. Yes, you are having a rough patch, but he cares for you so much.”
“I don’t think that’s true,” I said. “Or he would have tried to stop me. He would have fought for me.”
Josie hummed, her face serious. “My brother hasn’t really had a serious relationship before. He’s dated sure, but those were all fleeting things. With you, it’s different. He’s probably just new at this, Lily. I’m sure he’ll come around.”
I didn’t believe that, even as my heart wanted to so badly.
“Give him some time to see things clearly. When the anger and jealousy pass, he’ll realize what he’s done,” Josie said. “I’m sure, when he does, he’ll apologize and fix things.”
“I don’t know…”
“I’m sure of it,” Josie said. “My brother is a good guy. Just give him a little bit. In the meantime, you can of course stay here with me.” Her face brightened, eyes sparkling. “I’ve always wanted to have a sleepover!”
Grayson’s POV
I stared at the door Lily had stormed out of, confused about what had just happened. I had said she was overreacting only because she didn’t need to worry about Odette and me. In fact, seeing her react so jealously had filled me with a bit of… happiness… knowing that she had cared.
I hadn’t intended things to escalate. But neither had I been wrong about her need to stay away from my uncle.
She was being stubborn. In time, surely, she would see how ridiculous she was acting and would come back. I doubted she would even be gone for a full night.
She was being unreasonable. I hadn’t done anything wrong. She was trying to push her luck with me now, to try to get me to chase her. That wouldn’t be happening. I wasn’t going to take a step toward her, and I certainly wasn’t going to apologize first. I also wasn’t going to ask her to come back.
If this distance was what she wanted, then fine. She could have it. You’d think she’d be more eager to spend time with me, after how little we had been able to be together in the past few days.
This was entirely on her.
Determined not to let her absence bother me, I went into the bathroom to get ready for bed. By the time I came out, Lily would probably be there, begging for forgiveness. A smug smirk slipped onto my lips as I hurriedly finished cleaning and opened the door.

The room was empty. My smirk slipped away.
No matter. She’d probably be back any minute.
I moved to the bed and laid down. I wasn’t ready to sleep yet, wanting to be awake when she returned, so I sat up and read for a while.
I kept checking the clock.
Hours passed. She still hadn’t returned.
By morning, surely.
I set aside the book and got more comfortable. After turning off the light, I stayed still, listening for the sounds of footsteps in the hallway. I didn’t hear her, or sense her coming closer.
Frowning, I turned away from the door to keep from looking at it. But this put me in the direction of Lily’s half of
the bed.
I reached out and place my hand over her pillow.
I didn’t miss her. I wasn’t sorry.
But a hole was forming inside of my heart, and I knew only Lily’s presence would fill it.
