Chapter 155
Chapter 155
Lillian’s POV

After moving into Josie’s room, I spent most of my waking hours out in the training ground, striking at the training dummies or shooting arrows down the range. There hadn’t been as many people coming to see Teacher and me about training. I tried not to read too much into it, but it was difficult to think the latest rumors didn’t have something to do with these new absences. Especially because at the same time, I was not receiving any new invitations, though I watched as Josie’s schedule filled day after day.
The ladies of the court, it seemed, had already started to write me off. If I could offer nothing to them in terms of their advancement toward power, then I didn’t matter to them at all.
Josie and Clara were the only members of the court who kept me in the loop. I saw Josie every night, but they even visited me during the day, coming to the training grounds to check on me. Today was no different.
“More archery?” Clara asked, picking up one of the bows and a quiver of arrows. She took the post beside me.
“Lily, you can’t just hide out here,” Josie said.
“I’m not hiding,” I told her, as I notched an arrow and released it. The arrowhead slammed into the bullseye.
Clara whistled. She notched and released her own arrow, but it went wide, hitting one of the outer rings of the target. For her to hit the target at all was an improvement though. She was making good progress.
I tried to focus on that, and not the way my chest hadn’t stopped hurting since I left Grayson that night and moved in with Josie. That had been a week ago to the day now.
“If Grayson can’t find you, he can’t apologize,” Josie said.
“He could find me easily enough if he wanted to,” I told her.
“But -”
“Josie, I’m sorry. You know I care about you, and I’d like to talk about almost anything with you. But not this,” I said. “Not Grayson.
Clara finished shooting her arrows, then went to stand beside Josie, who had fallen eerily quiet. She was a chatterbox usually, so for her to be so silent meant that I must have hurt her feelings.
“I’m sorry,” I told her.
“It’s fine,” she said. “I just… I wish you two would make up.”
Softly, I told her, “That’s not up to me.”
They stayed only a bit longer, and we talked about the weather and the latest fashion trends. I didn’t really keep up with all that, but I pretended that I did, wanting things to return to normal with Josie again. By the time they had to leave for another event, she was back to being her usual chatty self.
As I hadn’t been invited to the event, I had a good reason not to attend. Even if I had been invited, I would have found a way out of it.
When they left I put the archery equipment away, then headed toward the training dummies to restuff the ones I had destroyed over the past week. Teacher was there, sharpening a blade with a whetstone. He looked at me but didn’t say anything, at least not right away.
“Your friends seem… nice,” he said.

“They are,” I said. “They care about me.”
He hummed. “I haven’t seen Prince Grayson out here much lately.”
“He’s been busy with Odette,” I said, trying not to be bitter about it. Some of it still seeped out into my voice, I was sure of it.
“I see.”
He paused a moment. “Would you like me to kick the snot out of him?”
The offer shocked a laugh out of me, but looking at Teacher, I could see he was serious. I shook my head, sobering. “Thank you but no.” The last thing I wanted to see was two of the people I cared about most in this life come to blows with one another, even if I was currently fighting with Grayson. Even if maybe he deserved a good punch in the nose.
