Chapter 153

Grayson’s POV

“That sounds like Lillian, doesn’t it?” Odette asked. “Should we check?”

I was already moving forward, wanting to see for myself what I was hearing. They weren’t far, just around the corner of hydrangea bushes.

Then I saw them. Lillian and Benedict, looking at each other in delight, laughing. Benedict’s arm was toward her, and Lily had her hand placed on his forearm. It looked like an intimate moment Odette and I had stumbled upon.

“Oh, Grayson, I’m so sorry,” Odette said at once.

Why was she apologizing?

But I already knew. She could see as well as I could that the pair were having a moment. Potentially a romantic

moment.

Was this what Lily did with her time while I wasn’t there to be with her? She found solace in the arms of my uncle?

Jealousy burned through me, hot and painful. I had trusted Lily. I had started to care for her. And she did this?

Dropping Odette’s arm, I forgot about her entirely as I rushed forward.

“Grayson?” Lily asked, surprised – and probably guilty. Caught in the act.

I stepped between her and Benedict, and shoved Benedict on the shoulder. “Back off, uncle, or have you forgotten

that Lillian is my mate.” The words came out in a harsh growl, my wolf snarling within me.

Benedict held up his hands, even as his own gaze was cutting. “Maybe you are the one who forgot.”

“So it’s true? The two of you are having an affair?” Grayson growled.

“Absolutely not,” Lily snapped from behind me. “We were just having a laugh. He was making me feel better.’

I turned on her. “I can see the way you were looking at each other.”

“You were imagining things,” Lily said, fire in her eyes.

“I know what I saw.”

Looking closer, I could see what fueled that fire in her wasn’t just anger, or even guilt – it was hurt.

“How could you question my loyalty? And with your uncle, who has always been so supporting of us,” I said.

“In my absence, your eye could wander,” I said. I was a prince and would not tolerate any cheating, not even from Lily. My care for her seared me now, making me regret ever even attempting to accept her.

“My eye?” she gasped. “How dare you accuse me of this, when you are the one who has been spending so much time with another woman!”

I grit my teeth, wanting to argue. Odette and I were just old friends. I held no romantic affection toward her at all.

But… If I tried to see things from Lily’s perspective… maybe she had a point.

If Odette and I could be just friends, surely the same was true for Lillian and Benedict. And I had been spending more time with Odette lately than I had my own wife, but I had reasons for that.

But it must be difficult for Lily.

Lost in thought, I didn’t immediately notice as Odette approached us until she was by my side again. Her hands clasped my arm, though she was looking at Lily.

“Oh, Lillian. I’m so sorry,” she said, her voice lilting and sweet. “I never meant to make a rift between you and Grayson. I hope you carr forgive me.”

Lily looked at her with a blank expression, her lips parted, but she didn’t say a word.

Benedict did, instead. “I think this is all just a serious of misunderstandings. I was simply taking Lillian for a walk to cheer her up, Grayson. We are friends. Clearly, the same must be true of you and Odette. You were likely here for similar reasons, yes?”

I looked at my uncle. On the surface, he seemed genuine, but I knew the man well. Despite being my uncle, he was only a few years older than me. We had practically grown up together. He was the kind of man who always thought three steps ahead.

He was quick to call this a misunderstanding, but I wondered about his motives. Lillian, I could believe, thought this was a misunderstanding. But Benedict? He had to be up to something.

“Uncle, can I trust you to take Odette back to her room?” I asked.

“But -” Odette started.

“That’s fine,” Benedict said.

“I think -” Odette started again.

“Lily. Come with me,” I said. I snaked my arm away from Odette’s grasp and held my hand out for Lillian instead. “We should speak about this privately.”

She gave me a curious, skeptical look, but still came toward me. She walked by me without taking my hand. We walked side by side, wordless, without touching, toward our shared bedroom.

When we arrived, Lillian walked toward the center of the room while I closed the door. With it closed, I approached her, and said, adamantly, “You are becoming too close to Benedict.”

Lillian’s POV

I’d felt hurt over Grayson’s accusations, but this new demand of his had my anger fire even hotter and stronger.

“How can you say that?” I asked, furious. “You are the one spending all your time with Odette.”

“Odette and I are friends.”

“But I’m not allowed to be friends with Ben?”

“Don’t call him that,” Grayson snapped. “You don’t know him. He’s -”

“This is a blatant double standard,” I told him, not caring what he had to say about Benedict. “You are allowed to have friends with members of the other sex, but I’m not?”

“I didn’t say that. You are overreacting.”

The thing about anger is, when someone accuses you of overreacting, it only makes things worse.

“I am not overreacting. You have spent nearly every moment with Odette since she has arrived.”

“We are good friends,” Grayson said. “You are misreading that friendship as something else. We have a shared history. We are very close. It’s natural that I would want to spend time with her. You are overreacting with this, Lily. You need to relax. What can I say that would calm you?”

Overreacting. You need to be relax.

With all of this, he was making a mockery of my feelings. Brushing me off. Acting like I couldn’t see what was really going on. Like what I felt didn’t matter at all.

That hurt worse than anything else he had said today or accused me of. He was so dismissive of me, it was as if he didn’t take me seriously. He had thrown his weight around when I was friendly with Ben, but couldn’t dare be questioned about his relationship with Odette.

“I can’t do this anymore,” I said.

I knew there was a suitcase under the bed. I’d used it when I’d gone to my father’s pack. I went for it now and opened it on the bed. At once, I went to the closet and pulled out a few outfits and sleep clothes.

“What are you doing?” Grayson asked, watching me.

“Packing,” I told him.

“Why?”

I didn’t answer, focusing on my task.

After only a few seconds, he stepped in to my path. I walked around him, bringing my clothes to the suitcase and folding them inside. Halfway through, Grayson grabbed my wrist, stopping me.

“Where do you think you are going?” he demanded.

I looked at him, ice in my veins, and said, “I’m moving out of our room.”
