Chapter 152

I wouldn’t egg him on when he was in a mood like this. On our own, we each showered and changed. We read while in bed, utterly ignoring each other. Grayson went to bed first, his back to me. I turned off the light, set my book aside, and went to bed too, my back to him.

The distance between us felt impassable, every inch a mile.

My heart ached, but I forced my eyes to close.

I shuffled down to breakfast, feeling like a heavy weight was on my shoulders, pushing me down. I ate in total silence, lost in my thought. After, Benedict approached me.

“Come for a walk with me through the gardens,” he said. “It will lift your spirits.”

“How can you tell I’m feeling down?” I asked him.

He gave me a flat look that said, are you serious? I supposed I was being obvious about it.

He held out his arm. “The fresh air will do you good.”

I didn’t see how it could hurt, so I looped my arm with his and he led the way, guiding me out the door and into the back gardens. The flowers were beautiful, the scents of them delightful.

I breathed them in, and they helped relax some of my tension away. Though it was difficult to not be so sad.

“Tell me what’s bothering you,” he said. “Maybe I can help.”

Perhaps Benedict, who was part of the Royal Family, might be able to tell me if the rumors were true. I couldn’t ask Grayson anymore, who had been so short with me about it, and Josephine has been missing from the past few

events.

“Is the King really attempting to negotiate a political marriage with the Lycan Kingdom?” I asked.

“You heard the rumors,” Ben said. “Of course you have.” He sighed. “It’s not really the King’s idea so much as the Council of Elders. They are exerting immense pressure on Grayson to take on this political match. The Lycan Kingdom were the ones to suggest it and no one in power here wants to risk offending such a powerful neighboring realm like the Lycan Kingdom.”

“So it’s true…”

“Grayson hasn’t accepted yet, to my knowledge,” Benedict said. “And with you as a wife, why would he want the switch?”

“You flatter me,” I said. “But we both know that I’m not a catch

“Who says that? The other members of the court?” He scoffed. “Lily, they wouldn’t know a good catch if it slapped them in the face.”

A good catch made me think of a fish, and it slapping them in the face made me think of a fish tale slapping one of the gossips right across the cheek. The thought made me laugh, as did Ben’s growing smile.

“I had a ridiculous thought,” I said, and told him. He laughed even louder than me, which made me laugh louder too. Like this, the weight I carried lifted and in this moment, I enjoyed myself.

Just for a moment.

“You should be in bed,” I told Odette, whose arm was looped through mine as she practically dragged me to the gardens. “You only just fainted.”

“Fresh air is what does the trick every time,” she said. “You wouldn’t deny a girl the chance to be among the flowers, would you?”

There were plenty of places I would rather be. With Lillian, for one. But with Odette so unwell, I couldn’t help put feel she needed me, even if my heart was elsewhere.

Then, from deeper in the gardens, I heard what I was certain was Lily’s laugh. And my uncle’s.
