Chapter 151

Lillian’s POV

I was grateful for Clara’s warning, because all day long, through the brunch event, the lunch event, tea, and dinner, I heard others talking about the rumors like I wasn’t even present.

“They’ll be such a lovely couple.”

“And think of the political gains! To have the kingdoms tied together in marriage will be so amazing. We’d have a steady ally.”

“Their children will carry the best of both of them. That family would truly bring this kingdom into a new age of prosperity!”

It didn’t matter how many times Clara shushed them, or how low I hung my head, no one cared about my / opinions or my presence. They were too excited for the prospects the rumors promised.

After dinner, Clara walked with me out the door of the dining room. “Ignore them. They don’t know anything.”

“I’m trying,” I told her. It would be easier if Grayson hadn’t been so distant. Our dance, I thought, had brought us closer together, but at the first moment, he went running back to Odette.

She was sick. I needed to be understanding. But it was difficult to not be upset.

There was another event this evening. One of the ladies was going to play the piano for all of us to enjoy. I wasn’t feeling up to it anymore, unsure how much more of this I could take. I’d be okay again in the morning, maybe, but right now, I needed some space.

“I’m going to retire for the night,” I said. “Please give my regrets to the others.”

“I will,” Clara promised, giving me a sympathetic look. “Try to get some rest. The rumors will blow over eventually. I’m sure it will get easier in time…” She let the statement hang. Coupled with her look of skepticism, I wasn’t sure she believed what she said.

I wasn’t sure I believed it either.

“Thanks, Clara,” I said, because I at least appreciated her attempts at making me feel better.

We said our goodnights, and I returned to the room I shared with Grayson.

  • My intentions were mixed. Yes, I wanted time alone but I also wanted to speak with Grayson. He wasn’t in the room when I arrived, of course, but I was determined to wait for him. If anyone would know what the King and Queen were planning, it would be him, and I expected the truth.

I sat down on the edge of the bed and waited.

This time, I didn’t have to wait long before he shuffled into the room.

“Lily,” he said, surprised. “I thought you had an event tonight.”

“I was feeling tired so I came back early,” I told him. I tried to swallow the hurt. Rather than being happy to see me, he had been surprised. Had he purposefully come here at a time when he thought I would be away, to avoid me?

“Are you feeling well?” he asked.

“I heard rumors. That the King was arranging a political marriage between this kingdom and the Lycan one.”

Grayson shook his head.

“People are saying the match will be between you and Odette,” I said, not holding back. I wanted answers. I was so tired of being lied to and pushed away. I wanted Grayson to look me in my face and clear the air one way or another.

“That’s baseless speculation. The court members get bored too easily and start imagining things,” Grayson said dismissively.

“So there is no truth to it?”

“I don’t want to talk about this,” he said, turning his back to me.

That wasn’t a confirmation. In fact, in deflecting like this, he was making me believe the rumors did have some truth to them after all. “But, Grayson -”

“Drop this, Lily. I mean it.” The words were biting, and silenced me at once. It had been a long time since he had talked to me so coldly. I could have made excuses for him. Maybe he was tired. He looked like he hadn’t slept in a while. But I didn’t know if these excuses were just lies I was telling myself to feel better. What was the truth?
