Chapter 150
Lillian’s POV
“Did he send you?” I asked Ivory.
“No,” Ivory said. “But I saw what happened, and where he went. I knew you were waiting. When I found out you hadn’t been told, I came here myself.”.
I lowered my chin. “Thank you for that. Maybe he thought he wouldn’t be so long. Or he lost track of time…” I was making excuses for him, but I couldn’t help myself. I didn’t want to believe that he had planned this for us, just for him to forget me after all.
“Maybe,” Ivory said, looking skeptical. She’d been jaded by love, and by her look alone, I knew she didn’t approve of the lies I was telling myself. But she was also kind enough not to point them out. “I’ll save the cake. Maybe you can delay to a different night.”
A night that wouldn’t actually be my birthday. “Yes. That would be fine. Thank you, Ivory.”
She nodded and stepped forward toward the table. As she passed me, she said, “Happy Birthday, Lillian.”
“Thank you,” I said, feeling hollow inside. “Goodnight.”
I walked out of the room, my feet pointed toward the bedroom. The sitting room wasn’t far from it and I was inside before too long. I kept a strong composure in front of Ivory, and in the hallway, but the minute I was behind the closed door of our shared bedroom, I leaned against it and slid down to the floor.
I didn’t cry, but I did cover my face with my hands, shame and misery flooding through me in equal measure.
My birthday celebration was ruined, but how selfish was I to care about that when Odette was sick. I didn’t want any ill to befall her. I wanted her to be well.
She and Grayson were friends. How could I be upset that Grayson would attend to her in her time of need?
The logical side of my brain knew all of this, but the emotional side was still torn apart in hurt. It was my birthday. Grayson had promised to be with me.
I shook my head. This hadn’t been planned. Things happened. I needed to be understanding. Grayson and I could celebrate another night. A birthday was just a day.
Using my guilt to push down the other, more selfish emotions, I pushed myself back to my feet.
It had been a long day, an even longer night. I was emotionally exhausted and physically so too. What I probably needed most was just a good night’s sleep.
With that in mind, I went to the bathroom, where I showered the day’s troubles away under the hot water. The steam filled the room and helped relax me, removing some of the tension from my muscles, from my bones.
After my shower, I dried myself with the fluffiest towel of the set before changing into my softest nightclothes. Maybe Grayson’s plans fell through, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t treat myself nicely.
Happy Birthday, me.
I walked to the bed, slipped under the covers, and closed my eyes, ready for the day to be over.
It was still another hour before I finally fell asleep.
Grayson did not return in the night, but as I was getting ready the next morning, he finally walked through the

door, still wearing yesterday’s clothes. His tuxedo coat was missing. His tie undone. His sleeves were unbuttoned and rolled up to his elbows. His slacks were wrinkled. I’d never seen him look so… disheveled.
Seeing me, he ran a hand through his hair. “Lily, I’m so sorry.”
“There’s no need to apologize,” I said without inflection. I had decided in the night that the only way I could deal with the foolish, selfish emotional side of my heart was to shut it off entirely. So that was what I had to do.
Grayson paused, his brow pulling together slightly. Then he continued, “Odette’s health is extremely fragile. When she fainted, it was terrible. Reginald and I rushed her to the healer bur he said her pulse was so weak that be wasn’t sure she would make it. I was afraid to leave her side.”\
I nodded. “It is good that you were there for her.”
Grayson looked at me again, more critically. “You are angry.”
“No,” I said, and that was the truth. I wasn’t angry. I had never been angry. What I had been was hurt. But right now, I felt nothing. And with that nothing came defiance. Why should I trouble Grayson with any of my meager feelings when he was so busy with Odette?
“I can’t stay long. I only came back to shower and change.”
“Is Odette still in danger?”
“No. She woke up.”
“Good,” I said.
“But she wants me and Reginald both by her side. She doesn’t feel safe. I think since the attack -”
“I understand,” I said, cutting him off. “You must do what you feel is necessary. If you will excuse me, I have a brunch to attend.”
He didn’t say a word, just watched me, as I walked out the door. What more was there to say?
Heading down to brunch, as soon as I walked through the doorway, Clara rushed toward me and urged me back out into the hallway.
“There’s new rumors. I want you to hear them from me before anyone else,” she said.
I braced myself, but the faux indifference I was attempting to maintain was quickly crumbling. I had barely held it together for Grayson. I couldn’t seem to push it forward at all for Clara, my friend.
“What is it?” I asked. I was afraid to know, but I’d rather hear it from Clara than from anyone else.
“Everyone’s talking about how the King is attempting to broker a marriage with the Lycan Kingdom.”
At once my mind picked Reginald and Josie, the two available children from both kingdoms. “Is Josie okay? Reginald is not a good match for her. I can’t believe she would willingly go along with that.”
“It’s not Josie people are talking about,” Clara said. “It’s Grayson.”
That made even less sense. “Grayson’s already married to me. I have his mating mark.” Instinctively, I lifted my hand and touched the raised scar on the back of my neck, the one that made Grayson mine and me Grayson’s.
“They think that will be dealt with easily enough,” Clara scoffed. “They don’t consider you a threat at all. They keep saying you are inferior and common, despite being the Gamma’s daughter. Because he never brought you to court, they are acting like you can be discarded just like that.”

“This doesn’t make any sense. Does the Lycan Kingdom even have any single female children of the appropriate age?” I asked.
“You are forgetting,” Clara said, frowning even deeper now. “After the attack, when Odette lost her memories, she was taken in by the Lycan Kingdom.”
The world stilled around me. “No,” I whispered, nothing more than a whisper.
“She was adopted by them,” Clara continued. “She is considered a Lycan Princess now.”
“So when they say a political marriage between the Royal Family and the Lycan Kingdom, they are talking about
“Yes,” Clara said. “People are expecting Grayson will be tied to Odette.”
