Chapter 149

Lillian’s POV

I placed my hand in Grayson’s, and his fingers closed around the back of my palm. People were whispering around us. Even Odette lightly gasped. But Grayson paid them little mind, and with his attention all on me like it was, had a difficult time looking away from him long enough to notice anyone else.

He led me out to the dance floor where others seemed to be waiting for him to make the first dance.

“Not Odette?” someone whispered.

There, Grayson tugged me into his arms, and I stopped being able to hear anything but the sound of my own beating heart.

The music started, the dance began, and Grayson led me through the steps of the dance. After a few moments, others joined us, dancing all around us.

I felt like we were flying.

Everyone had thought Grayson would choose to dance with Odette first. Even I had accepted that, as she was the woman of the moment. Instead, Grayson held me close, one of his hands fitted to the small of my back like it had been made for that purpose.

I had no idea how to thank him, he’d likely be mad if I tried, but I felt grateful. Grayson had chosen to dance with his wife. With me. And he made no apologies about it.

For days, since Odette’s return, I had been battling doubts and jealousy inside of my mind, but with this choice, Grayson was making his intentions clear, not just to me but to all of the Kingdom. I was his wife. I was the one he picked. Not her.

“Happy Birthday, Lily,” Grayson said, and my heart warmed further.

“How did you know?” I asked.

“Prime Beta looked into you from the start when my wolf accepted you,” he said. “I’ve kept the date in the back of my mind.”

“You remembered.”

“It’s an important date,” he said.

I smiled, unable to hold it back. “Are we still meeting tonight?”

“Yes. The surprise is truly a birthday celebration for you, just the two of us in private.”

“I’d like that very much.”

He tugged me closer, and I could feel his breath on my face. I licked my lips instinctively, wanting a kiss even while I knew and understood this was neither the time nor the place for such a thing. Even so, Grayson leaned in and softly pressed his lips to mine. A chaste thing, far too brief. But those that saw it still gasped, and inside, my heart pounded in a fast rhythm against my ribcage.

Too soon, the song ended and our dancing slowed. Grayson kept his arms around me for only a moment longer. “I will see you tonight,” he said, making it sound like a promise.

“Tonight,” I repeated, like I was sealing the deal.

He released me then, and was pulled away. Even after he had left me, I felt like I was walking among the clouds, so happy and so relieved.

People were still being dismissive of me, despite that dance, but their words couldn’t reach me now. I felt as if I was surrounded in the thickest armor, made fully by the knowledge that Grayson cared for me. That he had remembered my birthday. That we were going to be together tonight.

Maybe… Maybe it was time that I allowed him to claim my virginity.

The thought struck me like a lightning bolt and I froze on the spot. I had fiercely held onto my virginity all this time, waiting for the right person, my true mate. I’d denied Grayson in the past, not believing any feelings between us to be genuine.

But now…

He remembered my birthday. He had made plans for it. He had held me in a room full of people that didn’t want us to be together and kissed me, all under their watchful eye.

He had chosen me.

Wasn’t it time for me to choose him back?

My eagerness swirled with anticipation until I was practically buzzing. I trusted Grayson. He had shown me immense pleasure in the past. I was certain he would be gentle with me, would show me even more pleasures.

I believed that I would know in the moment. When we were at our private celebration, just the two of us, I would decide for certain. But already I was leaning toward giving him everything and accepting all of him. Maybe, though the relationship we had was built on secrets and deceptions, we could move forward with an actual romance now. A real love.

I couldn’t stop grinning, and the sharp comments of the guests lost all of their sting.

Eventually, the evening ended and it was time for me to meet Grayson. I followed one of the servants who he had instructed to lead me to the sitting room where we would meet. It was very near our bedroom but had a table and two chairs as well as a couch. On the table was a small birthday cake with unlit candles atop it. A lighter was nearby. Would he ask me to make a wish?

“He asked that you wait here,” the servant said. “He will be along shortly.”

“Thank you,” I told them.

They nodded and left.

The cake looked delicious and as I approached, I couldn’t help but steal a bit of icing from near the bottom and quickly tasting it. Buttercream. So sweet.

An image flashed through my mind of Grayson licking the cream off of my naked body, my breasts, and I flushed, heat rising in my cheeks and between my legs.

I was burning, hopefully Grayson would arrive soon.

Sitting on the couch, I kept my eye on the clock, watching the seconds tick by. Every minute felt like an hour.

At least at first.

The longer I sat there, the more I began to cool.

After an actual hour, I started to be worried. I’d wait though. Grayson was a prince. It wasn’t easy for him to get

away from his duties that easily. He likely was just finishing up and then he’d be along.

1 had to be patient.

Another hour passed and I started pacing, unable to sit still.

The cake probably shouldn’t be sitting out this long, but I couldn’t bring myself to call for the servants to clean it up. Grayson and I were going to share it. I was going to blow out the candles and then we were going to have fun with the icing.

That was my plan. I wasn’t going to lose sight of it. After dancing with me, Grayson had picked me. He had made this evening sound like a promise. He wouldn’t just forget.

At almost to hour three, someone finally opened the door.

“Grayson!” I said, jumping to my feet, ready to forgive the wait, ready to forgive anything and everything. So long as he was here now, this evening could still work.

But it wasn’t Grayson standing there. It was Ivory.

At once, my good humor sank all the way down to the ground, leaving me feeling hollow inside.

“He’s not coming, is he?” I asked, though I already knew the answer.

Ivory frowned. “Odette fainted. Prince Grayson personally rushed her to a healer.”

My heart, which had flown so high since the dance, came crashing back down.
