Chapter 140
Laila’s POV
“Forget I said anything,” Benedict said quickly, retreating from the words. “It’s all in the past anyway, and only speculation. No one knows what those two meant to each other but them.”
He said that, but the words stuck with me, aching in my heart. I had given Grayson permission to go with Odette, to catch up and speak of the night of the attack. Would I still have done that if I’d had this information?
I couldn’t allow myself to be jealous. I wasn’t that kind of woman. Grayson had kept his arm around me during their reunion. He had introduced me as his wife without hesitation. Whatever he and Odette had been in the past, I had no reason to believe they would still have those feelings.
But Odette’s glare…
No, I was going to put this out of my mind. Grayson had told me to enjoy myself, and I intended to. He would be back soon, I was sure, and I would feel like a fool for ever worrying about this.
That was what I told myself, as I tried to have fun with Josie, Clara, and Benedict for the rest of the birthday banquet. I also told myself that after saying goodnight and retreating to the room I shared with Grayson.
At once, I missed our room at the Rosegold Estate, but that place was only for hiding, and we had no need for that
anymore.
Instead, I had to be here, in the room where I had met Grayson, when I had thought him to be in a coma. So much had happened here. So many memories, good and bad.
Last time I had been in this room, I had also been without Grayson. I had taken drastic measures to free him.
Now that we were back, that he was free and forgiven, I felt strange once more being here without him, almost like he was still somehow locked in that cell. Truly, I wasn’t sure where he was. Had he gone to Odette’s room? Were the others still there?
Stubbornly, I didn’t want to think about things, to needlessly worry myself. So I forced myself to walk into the bathroom, where I showered and changed for bed.
Surely Grayson would be back before I was done.
Yet as I walked out of the room, Grayson wasn’t there.
Chatting with a friend you hadn’t seen in five years could take a long time. I was determined not to worry. This time, I forced myself to the bed, where I drew back the covers and climbed underneath.
I closed my eyes. Tried to relax.
A minute passed. Then two.
After twenty minutes, I gave up entirely on sleep and pulled out a book to read.
I reread the first line several times, none of it sinking in,
Frustrated, I set the book aside and closed my eyes again.
All night, I played this game. Trying to sleep. Failing. Trying to read. Failing. Back and forth all the way until morning, when I stood at the window and watched the sun rise. The entire time, Grayson’s side of the bed was untouched and there was no sign of him.

When I went down to breakfast, all of the ladies were talking about Odette’s return. They had nothing to say about Grayson being reinstated or anything else that occurred with me and the arrows, or Teacher.
I sat down beside Clara. Even Josie was caught up in the excitement, speaking animatedly with the others about how it was such a blessing Odette survived.
“A real miracle!” Josie said, clapping her hands together.
Clara gave me a sad kind of smile. “You look like hell.”
“I didn’t sleep,” I said. Lowering my voice, I asked, “You don’t know where Odette’s room is, do you??”
“No, why?” Clara asked.
I didn’t want to tell her that I wanted to look for Grayson. Maybe it was for the best that I just didn’t know. This way, I couldn’t embarrass myself by trying to track him down.
