Chapter 139

Lillian’s POV

Odette. I had, at least, a name for the beautiful woman at the top of the stairs. What I didn’t have in this moment was context. Who was Odette? I wanted to ask someone, but the people around me seemed utterly stunned by her presence. Even Grayson, who still held me tightly around the waist, seemed too shocked for words.

If he hadn’t been holding me so tightly, I might have been jealous with the attention he was giving this other woman. But the look he was giving her wasn’t the lusty ones he so often sent in my direction. Instead, he seemed … confused. Primal. In a way that was shaking him to his core. I stepped closer to him, offer what comfort I could with my closeness.

A moment passed, and a man joined Odette at the top of the stairs. He was well dressed with a blue sash and matching cape. He had a regal air about him, his dirty brown hair coifed in a way that must have taken time., Nothing about him, not even a single hair, seemed to be out of place. The man was perfection on legs.

Holding Odette’s hand, they descended the staircase. At the base, she spotted Grayson and her eyes came alight.

“Grayson!” she gasped and ran.

One of his hands fell away from me as he turned to face her. She flew herself against him, wrapping her arms around his neck. One of his arms was still around me, making his hug with Odette awkward and to the side.

Odette must have noticed, because, as her head slipped over his shoulder, she turned and looked at me, her eyes suddenly so cold that I shivered.

“I thought you were dead,” Grayson said.

Odette stepped back to address him. She only moved a foot away. I wished she would move farther.

“I almost did,” she said, her eyes filling with unshed tears. The change was so quick that I wondered if I had only imagined the chilly gaze. Perhaps in my jealousy, I had projected feelings of dislike onto her?

Grayson’s arm was still around my waist. I had no reason to be jealous. But I couldn’t get that glare out of my mind, even if it was long gone now.

“Five years ago, the night of that attack… the rogues were so ruthless,” she said. “I fell into that river. Goddess preserve me, I should have drowned. The waters carried me downstream. I ended up in an entirely different kingdom! The Lycan Prince himself pulled me from the frigid waters. Grayson, do you know Reggie?”

“Reginald,” the Lycan Prince said coolly. He placed his hand on the small of Odette’s back. She didn’t move closer, but neither did she move closer away.

“We’ve met,” Grayson said, matching his tone. “On a handful of occasions.”

Reginald gave no reply.

“He pulled me from the river, Grayson, but I had lost all my memories. I didn’t have a clue who I was. But Reggie, such a good friend, he helped me. I became so dear to all of the Lycan Kingdom royals. They are so kind, practically family now. But when I regained my memories, ‘I couldn’t wait. I had to come back. Grayson, I heard you were in a coma since the attack.”

I had so many questions. Grayson and Odette had been together at the time of the attack? Grayson had thought she was dead? Even now he was looking at her with disbelief, like he couldn’t bring himself to imagining this was real.

“Are you well? Have you recovered?” Odette asked.

“I’m fine,” Grayson said.

“Are you sure?” She reached out for him, but stopped, looking at me. “Who is this woman?”

“This is Lillian,” Grayson said at once. “The Luna Princess. My wife.”

“Your…” Her face shifted ever so slightly and for just a moment, I saw a glimpse into heartbreak. In a blink, though, it was gone. Another fast expression.

Which was the real her?

“How nice,” she said. “I’d heard that… oh…” Bringing a hand to her heart, she started to swoon. Reginald reached for her at once, catching her, even as she seemingly tried to sway in Grayson’s direction.

Grayson placed a hand on her arm to steady her. She leaned into him, ignoring Reginald’s more supportive hold

“What is this?” he asked. “Are you unwell?”

“She is fragile,” Reginald said. “I knew coming here would be too taxing. I warned you, Odette.”

“How could I stay away?” Odette said to him. “I needed to see Grayson again.”

Reginald grunted. To Grayson, he said, “She lost her wolf in the attack. She is frail now, sometimes weaker than a wolfless, quick to fainting when she is overwhelmed.”

“I’m well,” Odette said weakly, though she didn’t make any motion to pull away from either man. “Perhaps… I just need rest.”

At this the Queen came forward. “You are welcome to stay with us as long as you need. Your sister Ophelia and your brother Prime Beta will help make the arrangements. Perhaps you’d like to return to your old room.” At once, she raised her hand, sending some of the servants scrambling.

Ophelia started forward.

“Thank you,” Odette said, giving her a weak but grateful smile. “You are so kind.”

“We should get you to a healer,” Reginald said.

“I just need rest and I’ll be fine.”

Reginald frowned.

“Grayson. Please. Come with me for a while,” Odette said. “We have so much to talk about.”

“It can wait until you are feeling better,” Grayson said.

“Please,” she said. She blinked and some of the tears fell from her eyes, making her look particularly pathetic. Infuriatingly, in this moment, she was still beautiful. Her fragility was so affective that even I felt myself moved by it.

Grayson looked at me.

I didn’t know what to say.

“This way, sister,” Ophelia said.

Reginald started to pull Odette along, though her gaze stayed on Grayson.

“Please, Grayson!”

“I should go,” he said. “We are friends, and I need to hear what she remembers from that night.”

Enocked, not that he needed my permission. Still, he had it. He leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to my cheek.

“Enjoy your night. I will return to you when I am able”

I nodded, but still felt cold as he removed his hand from my waist.

Reginald and Ophelia led Odette forward, but Grayson now moved along behind them. Twice more, he glanced back at me, before disappearing behind the others out the door.

With them gone, the music picked up again, and the jovial mood returned to the party. Now, it seemed even more celebratory with many happy about the return of Odette, who had been presumed dead now for five years.

“A night of renewal,” someone nearby said.

I stood there in the middle of things, feeling somewhat awkward without Grayson near

Fortunately, Benedict offered his arm, plucking me from the situation as he led me away from the middle of the dancefloor where I had been standing like a fool.

“Don’t worry, Lily,” Ben said, patting my hand in offered comfort. “Despite what Odette meant to Grayson in the past, I’m sure they are just friends now.”

My stomach dropped to the floor. “What?”
