Chapter 141

What would I even say to him if I found him? You can’t have a friend anymore?

No. This wasn’t my business. I just had to be patient, and I was sure Grayson would return to me and explain his absence.

I just wish it was easier to be patient, when all I really wanted to do was throw a tantrum and be selfish.

After breakfast, I went out to the training grounds, hoping to blow off steam at the archery range.

Teacher was there, inspecting the equipment. I didn’t want to talk to him, for him to realize something was wrong, so I went straight to the range, grabbed one of the bows, and show six arrows in quick succession, all but one, the last one, hitting the bullseye.

When my quiver was empty, Teacher came up behind me. “Missed one. If I couldn’t already tell something was going on with you, now I would know for sure.”

“It’s personal stuff,” I said. “It’s so silly, it doesn’t matter?”

“You sure?” he asked, watching me closely.

“I’m sure,” I told him.

He hummed. “It doesn’t have anything to do with that one noble’s grand return, does it?”

“You heard about that?” I asked, surprised. He had left pretty quickly last night after Grayson’s name had been cleared. Though I wasn’t totally sure where he had gone, I thought he would have been too busy to hear all the gossip.

“The rumor mill here forces you to hear things, even if you don’t want to,” Teacher said. “Though I had heard she was involved in that attack five years ago.”

“Yeah,” I said. “Grayson has been talking to her for a while.” I worried my bottom lip with my teeth before catching myself and shaking away the worry. “He might have more insight when he’s done.”

“Good,” Teacher said. “Keep me informed about that.”

I looked at him now, considering. Why would he care about an attack on a pair of nobles five years ago?

“Don’t look at me like that,” he said. “I’m a rogue now, aren’t I? Or I was until this gig. There’s more going on here than any of us know.”

“Maybe we could ask her ourselves,” I said. “But I don’t even know where she is.”

“I saw them walking to the medical ward,” Teacher said. “Grayson, the Lycan Prince, and this new girl. What do you say, Lily? Put your mind at ease and maybe mind too. Let’s go see what she has to say for herself.”

I wasn’t so sure, but if Teacher was with me, maybe it would be okay, especially if he saw them going to the medical ward. I could say I was just worried about her, which wasn’t untrue. I didn’t know her, but I wanted her to be unharmed.

I had no idea if Grayson would believe it though.

Regardless, seeing them interact might unravel the knot that had been bundling up in my chest. That was worth a check, wasn’t it?

“Alright,” I said and returned my bow to where I had found it.

Together, Teacher and I walked to the medical ward. I asked where Odette was and, because of my status, we were shown the way.

Outside the door, with it open, I could hear talking within.

Grayson.

“I just don’t understand, Odette. You’ve said your memory is back. Why can’t you remember anything from the attack? Even the color of the attacker’s hair. One detail, and I’d have something to go on.”

“I keep telling you, Grayson. I just don’t remember. Can we please talk about something else?”
