Lillian’s POV

“You can’t prove any of this,” Calvin called. “He’s lying, can’t everyone see that? He’s mad that he’s being kicked out, that I’m taking his place, and this is his attempt at payback.”

“My son would not betray this kingdom,” said one of the Elder Council, the Alpha Minister. His piercing eyes locked onto mine, narrowing. “Likely, that harlot is driving your son to madness, my King. She attempted to do the same to my son, refusing to let him go even when he rejected her.”

“The Gamma’s daughter is a problem,” Grayson said. “She is above all an accomplice to my son.

“She is the Luna Princess,” Grayson said harshly.

But that would only be true for a few minutes more. Once the new heir was determined, I would lose my title and any place at the palace that I might have retained. Although, with my loyalty to Grayson, the only place I’d likely be offered now is a jail cell right next to Grayson’s.

“The proof,” the King prompted.

Grayson turned to Prime Beta, who stepped away from the crowd. A moment later, he returned from the servants’ quarters holding a shady-looking man by the arm. The man was small and round with tiny square glasses on the edge of his nose.

“Who is this?” the King asked.

“You know him as The Pen,” Grayson said, which garnered some reaction among the court. “His forged documents have been terrorizing the nobility for years, but he’s always evaded us. To prove myself, I went and fetched him myself.”

It hadn’t been Grayson who had apprehended him, but to protect his shadow empire, Grayson accepted all responsibility for it. The soldiers were happy to let him do so, both out of loyalty to their prince as well as a desire to protect their own anonymity.

“Catching The Pen is a boon to this court,” the King said. “But I fail to see how…” He glanced sharply at Calvin.

“The Pen will confess to forging the documents Calvin has presented against me,” Grayson said.

“He’s lying!” Calvin said at once.

“The documents may spread falsehoods, but I never speak a lie,” The Pen said boldly. “You came into my shop like a maniac, Calvin. You requested many things from me. Among them, correspondence and other false documents that the prince was betraying the King.”

“And you made those documents?” the King growled.

The Pen considered this. “He offered a great deal of money, your Highness. And I am a man of exquisite tastes.’

The man looked sleazy as hell, and I inched farther away from him on instinct, even though he was nowhere near

“You can’t believe him over me,” Calvin said.

The Alpha Minister added, “My King, the word of a known criminal is not one we can trust.”

“Perhaps. Perhaps not,” the King said, but in a deliberate kind of way that inferred he was considering it.

“I can tell you exactly what the documents say,” The Pen said. “Word for word. Calvin did not count on my photographic memory. No one does.” His gaze slid to Calvin. “I should not have taken this contract.”

Calvin swallowed hard.

“Fetch the documents,” the King said. “I will observe this talent.”

The documents were fetched and delivered to the King who held the paper in his hands.

“Begin,” the King said.

The Pen did, and the more he talked, the more the King’s brow furrowed, until finally, he said, “Enough. I’ve heard enough.”

“It’s lies,” Calvin said, but there was a quiver in his voice that hadn’t been there before. “It’s all lies.”

“Oh, Calvin,” the Alpha Minister said. “You are such a disappointment to me. I will cut off my son at once, my King. I had no idea he could fall so low. I am ashamed.”
