Chapter 137
The King raised his hand, and the Alpha Minister fell quiet. Calvin did not.
“But Dad -”
“Calvin,” the King said sharply. “You are hereby banished for the lies you have told here and the treason you have committed against my family.”
The guards moved at once, closing in on Calvin.
“This can’t be! I didn’t do anything! Dad, tell them!”
His father stayed quiet.
“Someone tell him! Please!”
No one spoke up.
The guards roughly grabbed Calvin by the arms.
“Stay quiet,” the King snapped at Calvin. “Be grateful you are only exiled and not immediately executed, which is my second choice for you.”
Calvin paled. Though his mouth stayed open, all that emerged from it now was the sound of squawk. The guards dragged him off. His eyes darted wildly about, like he was hoping someone, anyone, would speak for him.
No one did.
Grayson walked toward him. “I know what else you have done, even if I can’t prove it. You were behind my attack, weren’t you? That left me in a coma?”
“What are you talking about?” Calvin said, fear making his voice shake. “I had nothing to do with that.”
“You are lying.”
“I’d never work with rogues,” he said the word with such distaste that in that moment, I believed him.
Grayson must have too, because he backed off then. He turned to face me, a puzzled expression on his face.
“I think he’s telling the truth,” Teacher whispered.
“Me, too,” Grayson replied. “But that means I am back at square one.”
Soon, Calvin was dragged straight out of the room.
“Son,” the King said, his tone suddenly lighter, more accepting. “Son, I am so sorry to have doubted you. Your sister and Uncle have been speaking for you, trying to prove your innocence, and I could not see beyond my own betrayal. You are of course welcome back to this court, and your Luna Princess…” He looked at me. “We thank you for your loyalty to your prince, Lillian.”
I bowed my head. “Thank you, your Highness.”
Around us, the same gazes from the court that had looked at me with disgust and mistrust only a moment ago now peered at me with respect and appreciation. The change was so abrupt, so different, that I felt like I had whiplash.
“Your loyalty should be rewarded,” the King said. “I would be happy to present you with a gift. What is your

preference? Fine jewels perhaps?”
As all eyes in the room found me, I stepped forward. “Thank you, your Highness, but my dreams lie not with material things. My greatest wish is to be considered as a warrior.”
The King’s eyes went wide. The people immediately started whispering, some of them snickering with one another.
“She has strength and talent,” Grayson said, coming to stand beside me. “I have seen her talents with a bow firsthand, and have been impressed.”
“A Luna Princess with warrior talents would be most unorthodox.”
“Her talents should not be wasted,” Grayson said. “She would be a benefit to us all if she could be allowed to train them and use them in our defense.”
My heart soared, hearing Grayson’s praise.
“If I am to properly consider this, I will need to see her abilities myself,” the King said.
“Perhaps we could arrange a time…” I started.
From under his cloak, Teacher procured a bow and arrow and placed both into my hands. “Why wait?” he said with a grin. “I’ve never known you to be the type to procrastinate.”
The King straightened. The Queen covered her mouth with her hand. Startled gasps sounded in the room.
But as I held my Teacher’s bow, I knew this was the right choice.
“Your Highness,” I said of the King. “Please pick a target for me.”
