Chapter 135
Lillian’s POV
As Grayson and I were in the car, he adjusted the cloak I wore around me, pulling it more fully over my head to keep me better hidden.
We were parked behind the servants’ entrance at the palace. It was already the night of the King’s birthday banquet, and though we had spent the past few days planning for this, I still felt my nerves prickling underneath my skin.
“We have to stay hidden until just the right moment,” he said, not for the first time. “And you will do what I say. If I tell you to run, you will run. The servants will help you escape.
I wasn’t going anywhere out of there without him, but I kept that to myself.
“We’ve gone over this,” I said. “I know what to do.”
He hummed, but continued to look at me critically, like he could somehow adjust my outfit further, to better hide
Grayson would never admit to nerves, but this was the most nervous habit I’d ever seen him do. I understood it. There was a lot riding on tonight, and thought I had made contact with Teacher, there was no confirmation that he would show up tonight.
Riding on my own nerves, I leaned into him and kissed him gently. It was a bold move, something I likely wouldn’t have done anywhere other than this car, aside from our bed in the dark of night. But to calm us both, it felt necessary.
Grayson lifted his hands, cupping my face, as he kissed me again, making it linger by keeping me close.
“If only there was more time to appreciate your lips properly,” he grumbled.
My cheeks heated, my entire body warmed. I was still adjusting to this easy physical affection he showed me. I knew it had to be the pull of the bond driving his actions, and to my desiring them, yet I couldn’t bring myself to stop wanting them, wanting him.
If only there was time…
But there wasn’t.
Plans couldn’t wait, not with the Elders getting ready to announce a new heir tonight. If Grayson stayed gone, he might lose all right to the throne. That was something he would never allow, especially when the new heir would be someone like Calvin, whose ambition eclipsed all sense of decency and honor.
The kingdom deserved better than someone like that,
“Ready?” he asked.
I wasn’t, but I didn’t think I’d ever be. “I’m ready,” I told him instead.
He turned toward the door and, after adjusting his own hood, opened the door. He stood, then held out his hand for me. I took it and he helped me out of the car.
As we walked toward the servants’ entrance, the door opened. Prime Beta was there. “It’s time,” he said.
“Then we shouldn’t keep them waiting,” said a familiar voice from behind us. Prime Beta tensed. Even Grayson went stiff. But I turned and saw only a friend in my Teacher. A smile passed between the two of us.

“I have love for this kingdom,” Grayson said, “That’s what drives me.”
“You betrayed me,” the King snapped.
“No,” Grayson said. “I lied about the coma to find the attackers and save all of us.”
“Lies on top of lies. How can I believe anything you say?”
“Because I am not the one here who wishes harm upon this throne,” Grayson said. “I acted as I had only in an attempt to protect you and myself”
The King shook his head.
“I will tell you what I have uncovered,” Grayson said.
A hush fell over the crowd.
The King looked at his son once more. “You will share your supposed intel? Here?”
“Yes,” Grayson said. “Before you make a great mistake.”
As we drew closer still, I noticed the curious gazes of the Elders falling onto Teacher. One of the Elders paled, then hurriedly whispered to the one beside him, who also looked more critically. Teacher seemed entirely unbothered, as relaxed as I had ever seen him, like we weren’t in the middle of a viper nest.
“Tell me, then,” the King said, disbelief clear in his flippant tone. “What is this great reveal you have to share?”
“Calvin,” Grayson said, gesturing to the man, “has been conspiring to steal the throne right out from under you. If you make him your heir, you will likely be dead by morning. All under his design.”
Everyone turned their gazes to Calvin.
Grayson continued, “He wants to be King, and he doesn’t care what he has to do, or who he has to hurt, to achieve that.”
