Chapter 124

“I do,” I said. It was that simple. There was nothing else to say.

“Okay,” he said, accepting it just as simply.

We didn’t speak again the rest of the way, but the air around us remained comfortable, companionable. We were used to being together, even when just riding in the car. It felt right having him beside me.

I wasn’t ready to face why that was or what it meant.

I knew I was here only at Grayson’s behest. Someday, likely, he would settle things and want a wife for real. Whatever I was to him wouldn’t matter anymore. He’d find a partner much more suited to him.

For now though, I just enjoyed the closeness I was allowed, as we rode back into danger.

We arrived at the palace. The guards at the gate were surprised to see Grayson looking like a commoner in a commoner’s car, but they still opened the gates for us and allowed us through. Grayson pulled around the long driveway, stopping right in front of the palace doors.

He got out first, then came around to my side and opened my door. He held out his hand for me. I took it.

Behind his shoulder, I saw guards rushing toward us.

“Grayson,” I gasped, standing.

He turned, then blocked me at once, shielding me with his body as the guards moved in around us, all of their rifle barrels pointed at Grayson.

“What is the meaning of this?” he demanded.

One of the higher ranking guards pushed to the front. “Please step aside, Prince Grayson. Your mate, the Luna Princess, is under arrest by order of the King.”

“What are the charges?” Grayson demanded.

“Conspiring with the rogues against the royal family.”

“Where is your evidence?” Grayson said. “Show me.”

“We are only doing what is required of us, Sir -”

“Show me the damned evidence, and get those guns out of my face,” Grayson snapped, “No one is touching my mate.”

The high ranking guard straightened, then gestured for the other guards to lower their guns. “Prince Grayson, the King has all the evidence. If you must, please take the prisoner to see him directly, where she will be formally charged. But she will not leave this estate again unless in shackles.”

“Over my dead body,” Grayson growled. He held his hand back for me. “Do not let go of me, Lily.”

I grabbed onto his arm with both hands, eager to obey this particular command.

Grayson walked forward, me beside. The guards moved around us, making room before following along behind us.

“Do you know what this is about?” he asked me quietly as we walked to the throne room.

“No,” I said. “Could Calvin be involved? My father? They had forged documents to show your guilt in conspiracy. I

hid what I could… Maybe they had more. Or made more? Against me?”

My mind was reeling a million miles a minute.

“I will take care of everything,” he said.

I wanted to believe him, but I was scared. Not just for myself. If they had forged some kind of evidence against me, then what if they had forged new evidence against Grayson too?

We walked into the throne room, where the entire court seemed to be. I spotted Calvin in the front of the crowd, near the Elder Council, and even my father was among the crowd.

We approached the King and Queen, sitting on the throne.

“Whatever this is about, Lillian is innocent,” Grayson said.

“Then maybe you’d like to see the documents that have been presented to us,” the King said. “The Luna Princess was busy while you were in a coma, son. She used your condition to her advantage, making moves against us both. She even tried to poison me. For which, you know, she must be put to death.”
