Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 119

Chapter 119

I thought I might be rambling and worried my hands together, expecting some kind of reprimand, verbal at least.

Instead, he seemed to mull over the things that I said, and then replied, “I will try.”

As he stood there, I watched him attempt, loosening some of his posture. He struggled to hold that position, though. It must have seemed so unnatural to him, to act like this. But he was trying, he was putting his trust in me and my expertise, and for that I felt… happy.

He was taking this seriously. Taking me seriously.

It felt so good to be a part of something, to not just be discarded like I’d been all my life.

Admittedly, despite his efforts, he still looked like someone of high birth, but that wasn’t something that would go away in ten minutes of practice.

“Oh. Here,” I said, noticing something. I approached, then lifted up onto the tips of my toes to place my hand into his hair. I purposefully messed it, sending his hair in every direction.

Too late, I realized what I was doing – without permission – and how close it had made us.

His face was right there. His eyes looking into mine. His lips so close, so perfectly kissable.

I swallowed hard.

“Commoners don’t comb their hair?” he asked.

“Product is expensive,” I said. “And manual work would mean moving around. It’d be nearly impossible to have a perfect part.”

He hummed, his eyes on my face, slowly dropping to my lips.

Heat flashed through me and I backed up from him at once.

A hint of a smile curled Grayson’s lips but he said nothing. Instead he turned toward the house again as the guard came out with his wife, holding the keys to the small blue coupe in the driveway beside the royal black sedan.

“Good luck,” the guard said, handing over the keys.

“Tell Prime Beta what transpired here,” Grayson said. “But tell no one else.”

“Yes, Alpha.”

With that, Grayson and I entered the car, Grayson behind the wheel. This car lacked the luxuries of the sedan, but it was fun to drive in something so different. I had to turn the handle to lower the window. The radio only picked up a few stations. The seats were faded and worn, but oddly comfortable,

I was surprised Grayson knew how to drive, or that he knew all of the roads out of town without even consulting a map. But maybe I shouldn’t have been so shocked. Grayson was an amazing man. Every day, I was seeing new evidence of that.

We drive in comfortable silence for a while, listening to the music on the radio. Eventually, we drove away from all the places that I knew, out into the country. There, we started to see smoke plumes rising high in the sky.

“There’s a town ahead,” Grayson said, pulling over at the outskirts.

Through my open window, I heard the sound of fighting, shouting, metal on metal, gunfire, wolf growls and

howls.

“Stay here,” Grayson said.

“I’m going with you,” I said at once.

He shot me a look. “You will not. You will do as I saw. You will stay here, and if any danger comes you will flee Do I make myself clear?”

I swallowed hard. When he took that Alpha tone, I knew arguing was futile.

“Okay,” I said.

He turned then and ran into town, into danger, and leaving me behind.

No sooner had he gone ahead, disappearing down the street, then someone appeared beside my door. I lifted my hands to defend myself, but what could I do inside of a car.

My window was open. There was nothing between me and the arrow now in my face.

A hint of fear and a lot of rage filled me.

Looking past the arrowhead, I saw the man holding it.

A man I knew, but hadn’t seen in years.

“Teacher?”
