Chapter 118

Lillian’s POV

I met Grayson at the front of the medical ward, and together we walked back to the car where the guards were waiting. Before we reached them, I stopped Grayson and said, “What if we hid our identities?”

“What?” he asked, looking at me.

“If what that man said is true, then you’re being lied to about what’s really going on along the border,” I said. “If we go there, won’t they tell us the same lies? They might even put on a show about it.”

He considered this. “I suppose.”

“If they didn’t know who we were, if we just appeared like two commoners, then we might be able to see the full truth of it,” I said.

He was quiet for a moment.

“Does that make sense?” I asked, feeling a little self-conscious at his lack of response. Was this really a bad idea? Was he trying to think of a way to let me down gently?

“It does,” he said. “And I’m not opposed to it. But…” He cleared his throat, “I don’t have the clothes?”

“We can get some,” I said.

“You can borrow some of mine, Alpha,” said one of the guards. “If this is your plan.”

“And my car,” said the other guard. “It’s a beat-up old coup, but reliable. The sedan would be too obvious.”

My confidence grew, knowing I had Grayson’s most trusted guard on my side.

Grayson considered the two of them before looking back at me. Lowering his voice to a whisper, he admitted, “I don’t know anything about being common.”

“I’ll show you. You can follow my lead,” I said. I might not have been the best source either, the daughter of a Gamma, but my father had never treated me like I mattered over-much, so I’d spent a lot of time being watchful. I spent a lot of time with the servants and others, like my teacher who had trained me to fight, to shoot the bow.

“You are sure this will work?” Grayson asked me.

“No,” I told him. “But I think we’d have a better chance at uncovering the truth than if you went there in your royal garb.”

“That rogue could have been lying. None of this could make a difference.”

“But we have to be sure,” I reminded him of his earlier conviction.

Finally, he nodded. “Very well.” We looked to the guard. “Where is your car?”

The guards took us to one of their homes where Grayson went in to change. My outfit wasn’t elaborate, but the guard’s wife had a plainer dress they thought would be more convincing, so I changed into that.

I thanked her, and remerged from the house in a simple floral pattern dress with a pink sash around the middle. Grayson was wearing a flannel top and gray slacks. Both were a touch too small on him, hugging his back and around his ass, leaving very little to the imagination.

My mouth went dry at once, and I froze to the spot, unable to do anything but look. To admire the miles of

muscles on display.

Sensing me, he turned to face me. The top few buttons of the flannel were undone, showing his delicious skin underneath. The curve of a collarbone. The base of his throat. All of the places, inexplicably, that I wanted to place my mouth. Or, at least, the start of the list.

“Time for your lessons, then,” he said.

“Be less stern,” I said.

He blinked. Nothing changed.

“Slouch,” I told him.

“No,” he said.

“Grayson.”

“Plenty of commoners have good posture,” he said. “I will not ruin mine.”

“I’m not asking because I want to ruin your posture,” I said, approaching him. “It’s the way you hold yourself. You are full of pride, which… okay, you are a prince. You have oodles of pride. But you need to carry yourself with more… how do I explain? Like the world has kicked you a little. Like you are still proud but it’s because you’ve fought and survived, not because of your station.”
