Chapter 117
“Don’t test me,” Grayson hissed.
“How are they lying?” I asked.

“This isn’t rising tensions. Violence on both sides. The Royal Army has entered the neutral lands. This is an extermination campaign. They are razing our fields, cutting down women and children, anyone slow or weak enough to not get out of the way. Maybe you know that, Prince Grayson. Or maybe you don’t. But all those murders are happening on your watch. Your hands are bloody. And for what? We’re just trying to live out there beyond the pack borders. You just want all of us dead.”
I looked at Grayson, studying his face. I’d come to know him fairly well. While he hid most of his expressions, I saw a bit of surprise and confusion on his face before he schooled it away.
“Your side started this,” the leader said. “You pushed and pushed, killed civilians, destroyed our food. Where are we supposed to go? What are we supposed to do? It feels like you just want all of us to die.”
Grayson was quiet only a moment more. “I will go and see for myself what is happening on the front lines.”
“Sure,” said the leader, not believing him.
But I did. I could see the determination in his eyes. I was sure of it now. He had truly been caught unawares, and now he was going to get the proof for himself.
“I’m going with you,” I said at once.
“Absolutely not,” Grayson replied.
“Please, Grayson,” I said. “I want to help. And I can hold my own.
He looked at me and frowned. I could see the debate in him.
“I don’t want to be alone in the palace,” I said. “Not after what happened. And I can’t just sit around worrying about Ronan. Please.”
His jaw locked, but finally he nodded. “Fine. But we are leaving at once. If you want to say goodbye to Ronan, do it now, while I clean up here.”
“Clean up?” the leader asked. “What does that mean?”
“It means you are going to jail,” Grayson said, dragging the man up to his feet. “Where you will be fed a meal.”
“Oh, thank the Goddess.”
Grayson looked at me. “Go, Lily. We leave in ten minutes.”
Nodding, I turned and rushed into the hospital. At the door, I stopped to direct the guards to where Grayson was. They hurried off at once, as I went deeper into the hospital.
When I arrived at Ronan’s room, the doctor had taken what he needed from Ronan and was gone. I moved to Ronan’s side, guilt and hurt filling my heart once more.
Maybe I should stay, but what good would I be beyond a worrywart? The doctors and nurses didn’t need me hovering around, and Ronan wouldn’t want that.
I squeezed Ronan’s hand. “I’ll be back soon,” I promised.

Slowly, my thoughts returned to Grayson. His actions here surprised me. Not only had he let those two teens go, he had been rather gentle with their leader. I had seen his reaction to those rogues in the woods who had meant to do me serious harm. There had been bodies.
Now, he’d promised this man a meal.
And we were going to the front lines together to see if his words were the truth.
I had always thought Grayson was ruthless, and in some ways, he was.
But for the first time, I was seeing a different kind of leader.
Above all, he was a man who cared for the well-being of his people.
That was the kind of man that I wanted to follow.
