Chapter 116
Lillian’s POV
Though one of the rogues had me with his arm around my neck, he wasn’t actually squeezing me enough to hurt. I glanced and none of the men were holding weapons. This holdup felt less like a planned occurrence and more an act of pure desperation.
The man who spoke, presumably the leader as he seemed the oldest, was looking between the two younger rogues nervously. Looking now, I could see just how young they really were. Teenagers. The one at my throat had the thinnest arms I’d ever seen.
Grayson growled, low and dangerous, and all the men backed up nervously.
“I think you should let me go,” I said, speaking to the leader. He wasn’t very much older than the others, now that he was looking back at me. Maybe twenty? But that seemed like it was pushing it. “You don’t know who you tried to mug here.”
“You look like you have money,” he said. “And we need that.”
“Why?” I asked.
He swallowed. “Food.”
“Let me go and I’ll get you food,” I said, meaning it.
“Let her go or I’ll tear your throat out with my teeth,” Grayson said. He likely meant that too.
The leader paled.
Grayson didn’t seem to understand. With how loosely the teen was holding me, I could break the hold any time I wanted. I’d been hoping to try to figure out what was really going on here, but if Grayson was going to get violent, I decided that I had better show him I wasn’t at any kind of risk.
Quickly, I grabbed the teen’s arm around my neck and twisted it, not enough to break, but enough to let him know that was possible. The teen stumbled back, and I let him go. I wasn’t after him.
The leader was the one who might have some answers.
I pounced, tackling the leader. The two teens panicked and scrambled.
Grayson moved forward like he wanted to give chase.
“They are just kids,” I told him. “They won’t know anything.”
That stopped Grayson, an odd show of mercy from a man known to be ruthless. A thrill shot up inside of me, knowing that I had convinced him to hold back.
He came to me instead and helped me up. Then he grabbed the leader by the arm and shoving it behind him, kept the man locked in a tight grip. The leader was on his knees, looking up with fear,
“Who are you people?” he asked.
“You threatened the Luna Princess,” Grayson said.
He looked at me. “Oh, shit.” His eyes darted back to Grayson. “Then you…?”
“I’m the prince.”

“They said you were in a coma…”
“I’m awake now,” Grayson said. “And I want answers.”
The man huffed as he shook his head. “I’ll tell you whatever you want in exchange for some food. What I know isn’t really a secret anyway.”
“You will be fed. After I have my answers.”
“Heartless,” the leader scoffed.
Grayson pushed harder on his arm, causing him to cry out.
“You threatened my mate,” Grayson said. “You are lucky you still have your head.
“Okay, yeah. I get it.”
I thought I had better step in before this young man’s attitude got him in more trouble against Grayson’s anger.
“What are you even doing this close to the capital?” I asked. “I thought rogues only attacked the outskirts.”
“The tensions have been rising between the rogues and the Royal Army,” Grayson told me. “Violence has been escalating on both sides. You understand why I’m skeptical they are only here for food and not to start trouble.”
“Violence escalating on both sides? What is that garbage?” the leader said and spit on the ground. “Even saying those lies makes me sick. Is that what you’ve been told? Well I got news for you, Prince ex-coma, your informants are lying to you. Or you are lying to your mate. One of the two.”
