Chapter 115
Lillian’s POV
Being in Grayson’s presence gave me a relief I had never known. I was safe beside him, not just physically but emotionally too. Maybe that was why when he held me, I broke down, finally allowing myself to feel the pain I had repressed while I had been at my father’s house.
Grayson held me, non-judgmental. He allowed me to cry until my tears ran dry, while gently combing his fingers through my hair.
I relaxed against him so much, that I must have fallen asleep. I remembered nothing of the entire trip home. Between one blink and the next, Grayson was gently patting my cheek, waking me.
“We’re home,” he said.
I looked up at him, blinking the sleep from his eyes. His face was so soft. Gods I wanted to kiss him.
But I didn’t, embarrassment surging through me at my breakdown and at our closeness. Slowly, I pulled away from him.
“Thank you,” I whispered. He only grunted in reply, and a moment’s silence fell between us.
On my lap, I still held the vial of antidote. “I want to go to the medical ward right away,” I said. “We have to help my brother.”
Grayson leaned forward and pressed a button to lower the partition. “We need to go to the hospital first. Get us as close as you can.”
“Yes, Alpha.”
In the medical ward, I rushed to a familiar room where I knew Ronan to be. He was the same, eyes closed, face pale. A machine was now helping him breathe as well as tracking his heartbeat. An IV was pierced into his arm, giving him vital fluids. He’d already be gone without modern medicine, and that thought terrified me.
“Wait,” Grayson said as I stepped forward, ready to somehow administer the cure myself, I was so desperate. But I wasn’t a healer, I needed help. I looked back at Grayson. “Before we give it to him, we should be sure it is as your father said.”
Gods. I hadn’t even thought of that. What if this was just more poison?
That my father could be capable of this was unimaginable, but he was also the only reason Ronan was in this bed to start with. He couldn’t be trusted.
“Stay here. Be with him,” Grayson said, taking the vial from my hands. I trusted him, trusted him with it. “I will find the doctor I know best. I will stand beside him to make sure he tests this as soon as possible.”
Gratitude bubbled within me. He was so kind to me. I didn’t know how to express my thanks. I might have cried, if my tears hadn’t all been earlier used up.
Untrusting of the words in me, I nodded instead.
Grayson left the room and I went to my brother’s side, sitting in the chair I usually inhabited when I visited. Just like all the times before, I reached out and took his hand. It was so small, so cold.
He was so innocent. Life was too cruel to do this to him.
No. Not life. Our father.

Calvin.
Even Maren had been complicit, though I felt nothing but pity for her now.
Had I been wrong to plant those photos as I had? Calvin had been the one to push her of the stage, and to cheat on her besides, but I still felt a well of guilt. She might have lost her child. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, even someone who hated me. An enemy.
I allowed the guilt and the pain to wash over me, mourning the family Ronan and I could have had that cared for each other and loved each other. If he survived this, I would make certain he was surrounded by so much love that he would never remember the nightmare of where we’d been.
He’d have a good rest of his life. I’d personally make sure of it.
I stayed there alone with Ronan for nearly an hour before Grayson returned with the familiar doctor and the vial The doctor held it now in one hand, a syringe in the other.
“It’s legitimate,” Grayson said.
I stood, hope flooding my heart, though I kept holding Ronan’s hand. To him, I promised, “It’s all going to be okay now, Ronan. This is going to fix everything. Our father is never going to hurt us again.”
The doctor moved to the IV line. He inserted the syringe into the vial first, collecting some of the cure. Then he lifted the needle to the entry point of the IV line and injected it inside.
I watched as the clear liquid entered the tube and dripped down into my brother’s arm.
“How long will it take for us to see a reaction?” I asked.
“It shouldn’t be long,” the doctor said.
Watching Ronan’s face, I held my breath until I couldn’t anymore. I took a breath, then held it again.
This continued on for several long minutes.
The doctor checked his watch, his face crinkling.
“Doctor?” Grayson asked.
“Something’s wrong,” the doctor said.
“You said the antidote is legitimate,” Grayson said, stepping forward.
Panic had me by the throat, making it difficult to speak.
“It is,” the doctor said. He grabbed his stethoscope and listened to my brother’s chest. “This doesn’t make any sense.” He paused. “Unless…”
“What?” I croaked.
He looked up at me, pity forming in his eyes. “It’s possible that your brother has a unique constitution that is resistant to the cure. It’s rare, but possible. Some wolves resist certain treatments. His body could see the cure as a threat and be eliminating it before it can destroy the poison. I will have to run a few blood tests to be sure.”
“Do it,” Grayson commanded.
The doctor nodded, and I knew it would be so.
Looking at my brother, at his pain, at the tubes and wires connected to him, my heart cracked. As much as I loved

him, I couldn’t bear to look at him anymore. It hurt too much.
“Lily. Come with me,” Grayson said, holding his hand out of me. “Let’s go for a walk while the doctor does his work.”
The doctor and Grayson shared a nod.
Feeling defeated, I took Grayson’s hand and allowed him to lead me from the room.
The capital prided itself on it’s gardens and vast natural spaces, so when we exited the medical ward through the back door, we were immediately greeted with a world of green. A park that backed up to a forest.
It was peaceful here, though there were no birds singing. Was it too late in the day?
I had enough on my mind to worry about it. Releasing Grayson’s hand, I walked forward through the park, with it’s tall trees and bushes. Grayson moved silently behind me, his presence a comfort in my pain. He didn’t say a word, just watching me. I wouldn’t know what to say anyway.
I’d only just passed a tall bush, when a hand reached out to grab me. Three rogues appeared from the brush. One wrapped his arm around my neck.
“Give us all your money,” said their leader. “And we will let her go.”
Grayson’s eyes flashed red. “You will let her go now.”
“Money, first,” said the rogue.
He clearly had no idea who he was dealing with.
Grayson’s hands curled into fists.
