Gamma bowed even lower. “Of course. Yes. At once.”

“But give me the antidote first,” Lillian said, grabbing her father’s sleeve.

“Don’t touch me, wretch,” he hissed.

That was enough for me to move. In a blink, I was beside him, between him and Lily.

“You have put your hands on my mate for the last time,” I growled. “You promised her the antidote for her brother, and you will deliver it. Now.”

Gamma paled even further. I clutched his arm tighter, enough to hurt, showing I wasn’t playing around here. We would have that antidote, or I would take his arm. It was his choice.

“Fine,” he grumbled. “Anything for my prince.”

He reached into his jacket pocket and retrieved a small vial. The minute he held it out, Lily snatched it from his hands and held it protectively against her chest.

“That should be enough to cure the brat,” Gamma said, heartless even to his own child.

What a cruel, despicable man. How did someone like this become Gamma? He did not deserve the title. When I was on the throne, I would work to remove him from the position entirely.

I released him, deigning not to touch him any further. He stumbled away, then rushed forward into the crowd.

Finally, when I held my hand out for Lillian, she took it. “I’m getting you out of here.”

“I need my suitcase,” she said, trying to lead me to the house.

“I’ll buy you whatever you need.”

“No,” she said, oddly desperate. “You don’t understand. I can’t leave that here.”

I looked at her, saw her eyes darting around. Whatever was in that suitcase was not something she would talk about here around strangers.

“Very well. Show me.”

“I can get it,” she said.

“No,” I said flatly. After what just happened, I wasn’t letting her out of my sight again.

She showed me to her room and we retrieved her suitcase, I carried it out to the driveway where two of my guards were waiting with the car. One of the guards took the suitcase and put it into the trunk.

My arm around Lily, I guided her to the backseat of the dark sedan. The minute we were inside, I raised the partition so that we could be alone. Doors closed, the engine started, the guard behind the wheel started driving us away from this nightmare.

She looked at me with enough longing in her face to feel like a stab in the chest. “How did you know I needed you?”

“You didn’t call,” I said. But that was only half-true. If I allowed myself to reflect, I had an uncomfortable feeling I just couldn’t shake. Yes, I had surprised the Elder Council were wasting my time, and I had suspected Gamma had tried something when I hadn’t heard from Lily.

But that wasn’t what sent me sprinting from the palace, demanding that the guards drive faster, reckless, to get me to Lily as soon as physically possible. It wasn’t what had my wolf in a rage, my own person unable to rest until I could see her safe.

Until this moment.

What had driven that reaction was something else, something primal.

Something I couldn’t accept or acknowledge.

But that same something had me opening my arms to her. She moved at once, curling up into the space near me, safe in my arms against my chest.

Her warm tears stained my shirt. I held her tighter.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

“Don’t,” I replied. She’d been through a trial. She didn’t need to apologize for having emotions about it.

“How can I still feel grief? After all my father has done, why does it still hurt?” she asked.

I wished I had the answers, but I didn’t. All I could do was hold her, so that was what I did.

Between us, the bond thrummed, strong. Restored.

“Everything will be okay now,” I promised, and hoped it was a promise I could keep.
