Chapter 112

Lillian’s POV

The crowd slowly quieted, everyone gathering around the stage. I stayed nearer to the back, grateful that the guard didn’t push me forward, though I was certain he would stop me from trying to leave altogether.

“I thank you all for joining us today in the celebration of my daughter’s engagement to the esteemed Calvin,” my father said. “Maren will be a good support for Calvin as he moves forward.”

Maren wrapped her arms around Calvin, looking up at him with clear love and adoration. He didn’t bother looking back, but did smile for the crowd that politely clapped for them.

“That being said,” my father said, clearing his throat. “I would be remiss if I didn’t use this opportunity of your presence here to warn you about some of the things Calvin and I have uncovered regarding Prince Grayson.”

The polite clapping stopped and a hush fell over the crowd. Oddly, there was only minimal whispering, none done, from what I could see, by the higher ranking members of the court or by the Elder Council. Almost like they had already known this was going to happen, and only family members and local friends were surprised.

Was this how my father assured their turnout? By whispering promises of evidence and betrayal of Prince Grayson?

“I have uncovered reasons to believe that Prince Grayson has been conspiring against his father, the King, to take the throne sooner than should be necessary.”

That, did make whispers.

“Show us the proof!” called one court member.

“I won’t believe that without evidence,” said another.

My father held out the envelope. “I have the proof right here.” He opened the envelope and upturned it while holding his hand beneath. He was clearly expecting the paperwork, and not the flutter of photos that spilled out as well. The wind picked up, carrying some of the photos into the crowd, while the others went down to the stage.

Maren leaned down and pictured one up.

The whispers in the crowd turned into a rabble.

My father looked through the papers, realized they were blank and threw them down in a rage. “We’ve been sabotaged!” He peered over the crowd, before his gaze zeroed in on me.

At the same time, Maren showed the photo she held to Calvin.

“What is this? Who is this?” she shrieked, drawing the attention of much of the crowd, making a scene,

“Don’t raise your voice to me,” Calvin growled in reply.

“Who is this woman?”

“It doesn’t matter who she is.”

“I am your wife!”

“You are nothing yet!” he replied sharply, raising his voice as she did.

“I am carrying your child!” she cried, tears streaming down her face, her voice cracking. “How could you do this?

How could you mean this? Tell me it’s a lie.” She clung onto his arm with both of her hands, shaking him.

“Get the fuck away from me, woman!” he shouted at her and shoved her.

They were very near the stage. Her heel caught on the edge of it and she started to fell.

He had Alpha reflexes, and he was within range to grab her. He could have caught her. He could have stopped this. Instead, he just watched, his face twisted with rage as Maren slipped off of the stage and fell down onto the

ground – on her belly.

She screamed in pain.

I tried to take a step forward. Despite our many, many differences, Maren was still my sister. Beyond that, she was still a pregnant woman in pain. I wasn’t a healer, but I had to do something! Before I could move, though, the guard behind me caught my arm and held me still.

I wasn’t the only person affected by Maren’s screaming. Other women surged forward toward her, even ladies of the court. The men in the crowd, meanwhile, glared daggers at Calvin and at my father.

The two from the Elder Council looked at each other, then made their way to the back of the crowd, disappearing. They had likely seen enough.

“She was pregnant!” someone in the crowd shouted.

“We need a doctor!” called another. “Is anyone a healer?”

“I am!”

“Let him through.”

“This is the kind of man you support, Gamma?” shouted someone else.

“You stand by him when he hurt your daughter?”

My father paled sheet-white. He looked down at the blank pages and photos of Calvin and Ivory that was supposed to be his evidence. I knew my father well. I had seen all stages of his disappointment and his rage. He filtered through all of them now. Then he lifted his eyes to Calvin, glaring.

“How could you do this, Calvin? You have betrayed me and betrayed my family,” he said.

Calvin glared right back. “What the hell are you talking about? All of this was your idea!”

“It wasn’t, and I will not have you tarnish my good name with your dirty lies!” my father said.

Calvin looked around, panic filling his eyes. He must have seen how the crowd was turning. Yet, even as he took in the crowd, he never once looked at Maren, who continued to moan in pain, even with the healer attending her on the ground.

Instead, his gaze found mine. With how cold he was looking at me, my blood ran cold, ice water in my veins.

Then, with the crowd beginning to jeer him, he turned, jumped off the stage, and fled.

Some of the crowd started to follow but stopped at the gate, when Calvin hopped over it.

My father also descended the stage. The decent thing would be to check on Maren. Instead, he cut through the crowd, headed directly toward me.

“I don’t know how you did this,” he hissed, as he neared. “But you will pay for it.”

“I didn’t-” the lie was barely out of my mouth, before he reached out and grabbed a fistful of my hair. I cried out as he pulled, dragging me toward the house. “Just let me go! I’ll leave and you’ll never see me again! Give me the antidote and let me go!”

“You think I would give you anything after what you’ve done! This family’s disgrace is your doing. You are never leaving this house again, except in a coffin, you bitch.”

I grabbed his wrist, clawing at his skin, trying to get him to release me. His grip was tight. The crowd was thoroughly distracted with Calvin and Maren. No one was paying me any attention except the guards who were on my father’s payroll and wouldn’t help me anyway.

The only one who could save me was me. But in my father’s rage, it was as if he couldn’t feel pain. No matter how deeply I dug in my nails, he had no reaction.

I couldn’t let him get me inside. I was sure he meant to kill me.

“Release her at once,” came a familiar, authoritative voice, but I had to be imagining it. No way could Grayson be here.

Yet, my father stopped in his tracks.

I looked up.

Grayson was there, standing stoic, his eyes slightly narrowed. He was directly in my father’s path, blocking the entrance to the house.

“Release my mate,” Grayson said, a hint of a growl in his voice. “I will not say it again.”
