Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 111

Chapter 111

The maid turned to me. “Miss, it’s time for you to dress. Your presence is required at the ceremony.

I eyed the maid. She was a frail thing. She wouldn’t be able to force me.

“If I refuse?” I asked.

Her blank expression did not change. “Either I can help you dress or the guards can force you. I think you’d rather have my help.”

She wasn’t wrong. Besides, maybe I wouldn’t mind having a front row seat to this event, after all,

Or, at least, I might be able to see an opening for escape.

“I’d like your help, thank you.”

She nodded and gestured for me to come nearer the wardrobe.

The house had no ballroom like the palace, so the celebration was mostly held outside in the courtyard. Tables and chairs had been arranged there, as well as a small stage. A string quartet were beside the stage, playing some soft -music. Not the dancing kind. More, ambiance.

My father and Calvin were near the stage. Maren was between them, hanging on Calvin’s arm, laughing too hard at everything Calvin said.

Looking around, I recognized a lot of the attendees, including two of the Elder Council. But none of them I would trust with the things I knew. I had no idea if these members of the court were loyal to Grayson. If they were here, signs pointed to them preferring Calvin instead. At the very least, they were curious about him. That alone was enough for me not to totally trust them.

Calvin was a snake, but he was a charming one, able to hide his scales behind his charisma. I couldn’t trust anyone who couldn’t see beneath the charm to the danger beneath.

I had an escort as I entered the ceremony, a guard standing ever at my side and slightly behind me. If anyone asked, I was certain the lie would be that he was there for my protection, due to my important as Luna Princess. In truth, he was a jailer more than a protector, to keep me from running.

Probably to keep me from talking too. Maybe it was for the best that I saw none I trusted.

Seeing me, Calvin slipped away from Maren and made an approach. I tried to back up, to return and infuse myself with one of the chattering groups of guests, but the guard shifted then, blocking my path. At Calvin’s command? One of his soldiers then? Or were he and my father so intertwined now that guards for both men were now one in the same?

I could go nowhere as Calvin closed the distance between us,

“Lillian. I’m so glad you are here. In short time now, you are going to watch everything change.”

“You can saw what you want,” I told him, “But people will still favor Grayson. He is the rightful heir.”

Calvin’s smile twitched. “So faithful to a man who doesn’t love you.” He lifted his hand and brought it toward my cheek like he meant to touch me. When I winced, he stopped.

“You need to accept this,” he said cruelly. “Your life with Grayson is over. Very soon, you will be mine.”

“And Maren?”

“She knows the way of things.”

Given how she acted earlier, I doubted that very much.

“You belong to me, Lillian,” Calvin insisted. “Accept it, and it will be easier for you.’

I glared at him. “I will never be yours.”

He huffed. “Fine. Wait and see for yourself. When Grayson’s future falls, you will come crawling to me. You will. beg me on your hands and knees to be mine. To have my favor again. You had better pray I’ll be merciful then.”

I would rather face whatever dread fate he predicted for me than beg to be his, and I almost said as much, but my thoughts scattered as I watched my father enter the house.

Without my fight, Calvin grew bored and left me alone, muttering only, “You’ll see. Soon, you’ll see,” as he left

A moment later, my father remerged from the house, a familiar large envelope under his arm. He walked straight for the stage, Calvin joining him there. Maren trailed along behind, going up the stairs without anyone’s help.

“May I have your attention please,” my father said. “I have an important announcement to make.”
