Chapter 110
Lillian’s POV
“Should we bring the evidence with us?” Calvin asked.
“Too risky,” my father said. “Leave it here until the time for speeches tonight. Then I will retrieve it and we will convince everyone to see Grayson as we see him.”
“He’ll wish he stayed in that coma,” Calvin laughed.
My father did not. “He was never in a coma. Remember? You are already forgetting the things we came up with”
“Oh.”
“Better to let me do the talking tonight.”
They started coming toward the door. In a panic, I looked around. I didn’t have time to return to my room, but at least I’d had the mindfulness to close the door behind me, so it seemed as if I was still trapped inside.
I needed somewhere closer to hide.
There!
I reached for a nearby closet in haste and slipped inside. I started to close the door quickly, but stopped just before it could latch and make a sound.
My father and Calvin stepped out into the hallway at exactly the same moment. My father closed and locked his bedroom door, tucking the key into his pocket.
“There. Safe and sound,” he said. “Now, you have some celebrating to do.”
“I’d like to see Lily first,” Calvin said.
My heart leapt into my throat.
“Leave her,” my father said. “The dumb bitch still thinks she has some kind of cards to play. Don’t even engage with her. She’ll be at the ceremony. You will see her face there, when we show the evidence to everyone else, and her entire world falls apart.”
Calvin laughed. “Yeah, I can’t wait to see that.”
I watched through the crack in the door as my father patted Calvin on the back and led him down the hall. Calvin looked at my door but didn’t approach it. Then they turned and disappeared down the stairs.
I waited until their footsteps were out of earshot, then slipped out of the closet. I rushed to my father’s door, my nail file already in my hand.
The angle of the lock was different from the outside, making it more difficult. I growled in frustration but kept trying. I wasn’t going to give up. I needed to get into this room.
A minute passed.
“Come on,” I hissed at myself impatiently.
Then, finally.
Click.

The door popped open. I slipped inside, closing the door behind me. I rushed to the desk and found all of the ‘ evidence’ my father and Calvin had been talking about, tucked inside of a large envelope. A few pages of forged documents, and my ‘confession’.
I grabbed all of them to be destroyed later.
But I couldn’t just leave the folder empty. My father had some other pages to the side. Blank sheets of paper. I grabbed them and stuffed the envelope to look as full as it had been before. Then, taking Ivory’s envelope from my pocket, I upturned it into the new ‘evidence,’ watching as most of the pictures of Ivory and Calvin toppled down inside.
I pocketed the rest, the forged documents, and my nail file and carefully left the envelope exactly where I had found it.
I would have liked to keep searching, to maybe find the antidote, but that would take too long now. I couldn’t risk being found missing from my room.
As I reached my father’s door, I pressed the lock from the inside so when I closed the door, it would be locked again. Hopefully, my father’s suspicion would not be raised when he went looking for the documents, and he would retrieve them without checking their contents.
With the door secure, I rushed to my own room. I slipped the remaining photos, my nail file, and the fake documents into the secret compartment of my suitcase, closing it just as someone placed a key into the doorknob of my door.
Closing my suitcase, I turned to face the intruder, bracing myself for the worst. Had I been seen? Or was this another family member or worse, Calvin, coming to gloat some more?
A maid opened the door, and I breathed a sigh of relief. No gloating then.
She had a dress bag draped over her arm. After entering the room, she turned and locked the door again behind her. Then she approached, holding the bag. She opened the wardrobe, hung up the bag, then opened it.
Inside was a beautiful blue gown, simple yet elegant, with lacy trim.
