“You don’t have to say them. You just need to sign the confession.” My father plucked a single sheet of paper from the desktop and handed it to me. On it was a neatly typed confession, done at a typewriter, with everything my father said, as if I had been the one saying it. “I’ve already done all the work.”

“I won’t lie about Grayson,” I said and threw the paper back to his desk. It fluttered down onto the desktop.

My father’s voice was cold. “You will do as I say if you want the antidote.”

I swallowed hard. I had agreed to come here, ready to do what was needed to save my brother. But this was more than any personal sacrifice. It was even bigger than damaging Grayson’s reputation. If I agreed to this, if I pushed this along, it could change the entire course of the kingdom’s future.

How could I be complacent in that? How could I help my father and Calvin to gain that kind of power, knowing only a part of the evil they are responsible for?

My father poisoned his own son to manipulate me, his daughter. Calvin had whispered me love promises while sleeping with another. He’d made threats of the worst kind against me, the things he had wanted from me… All for the sake of power.

Who knew what those two would be capable of, if they would actually achieve their ambitions?

Ronan, if he recovered, knowing what I had done to save him… When he became old enough to understand, would he ever forgive me?

Would I ever be able to forgive myself?

And what would happen to Grayson? Accusations like this wouldn’t be taken lightly. He could suffer extreme consequences. I couldn’t allow that either.

Swallowing down my fear at what might happen to me and to Ronan, I chose strength. Looking up in my father’s eyes, I told him, “No.”

“No?” he scoffed. “You can’t tell me no!”

“I did. I am. The answer is no. I will not sign this.”

“Not even to save your brother’s life?”

I paused, but my will was iron. “No.”

Growling, my father barked at the guard, “Grab her hand.”

“I won’t sign!” I shouted, struggling as one of the guards gripped my hand. “You can’t make me sign.”

“Hold her hand out straight,” my father said.

I tried to grip my fingers into a fist, but the guard grabbed my hand and pried the fingers open. My father brought forward an ink pad.

Against my will, my thumb was coated with ink and pressed against the paper, leaving my thumbprint as a mark on the confession.

That shouldn’t be enough. Surely people would know that this was coerced! But I wasn’t confident enough to be sure this would end well.

“Take her to her room and lock her there,” my father said to the guards who started pulling me away. To me, he

said, “Get comfortable, Lillian. You are going to be here for a long time to come.”

I was so stunned, I didn’t know what to say. What could I say that would convince a madman he was being mad? We felt so far beyond that now.

The guards dragged me upstairs to my old room and tossed me into it. At once, I went to the windows, but they were locked tight, sealed as if this place had been purposefully turned into a prison. How long had my father been planning this?

My suitcase was placed on the bed. My being brought here was no impulsive decision.

“Is she in here now?” asked a female voice to the guards.

I recognized it.

“I’d like to speak with her,” Maren said.

“Your father won’t like it,” said one of the guards.

“Leave my father to me,” Maren said, and stepped into the room with me. The guard closed the door behind her.

She grinned at me. “Hello, sister.”
