Chapter 106
Lillian’s POV
“What is the meaning of this?” I demanded. “I was given a formal invitation.”
“And we thank you for accepting that invitation,” my father said, walking closer. “I am assuming that you want to negotiate for the antidote to what ails Ronan, yes?”
I lifted my chin, ever so slightly, but didn’t say a word.
“Yes, that’s what I thought,” my father continued. “If you want that antidote, then I expect you to be a good daughter and obey your father’s orders.”
I wanted more than anything to snap at him, to shake my arm loose, and leave him in the dust as I returned to the capital. But for Ronan’s sake, I couldn’t. I had to be stoic and strong. Silent. Every watchful for my time to get that cure and get out of here.
But for now, that also meant that I had to go along with what my father wanted.
“Join me in my study, daughter. We have much to talk about.”
With a guard on either side of me, I didn’t see how I had much choice. Though even without the guards, for Ronan, I would have gone.
We went together up to his office, where he moved to stand behind his desk. The guards walked me to one of the chairs facing the desk and I was forced to sit down onto it.
“What do you want from me?” I asked.
“Your signature,” my father said.
I narrowed my gaze. “On what?”
“A set of papers,” he said. “A confession, explaining all the terrible acts Grayson is guilty of.”
“What are you talking about?”
“His coma was fake,” my father said.
I caught my surprise before it made its way to my expression, carefully keeping my entire face blank. I would not be the reason Grayson’s secrets were exposed. I’d made that vow a long time ago.
My father watched my expression for a long moment, like he expected a slip-up. The longer I stared back blankly, the more annoyed he became.
“Grayson kept you hostage,” he continued. “While he pretended to be asleep, he secretly plotted a rebellion against the current King and Queen.”
“None of that is true,” I said.
My father huffed a sharp laugh as he shrugged. “It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not. It’s what you are going to say. It’s the push we need to finally bring down Grayson’s influence and have Calvin take his place as heir to the throne.” ”
“…Calvin?”
Slowly I was starting to piece together what was happening here. My father had fully thrown his lot in with

Calvin, defecting to Calvin’s side and pushing for him to become successor and take over the throne.
The story they were pushing wasn’t just some lie they were making up. They were telling on themselves. They accused Grayson of plotting but they were the ones attempting to steal the throne.
“Yes,” my father said. “Calvin will sit on the throne in time, and Maren will be beside him.”
“And what do you gain?” I asked. “You are already the Gamma? What more could you want?”
“There is always room for more power, daughter. More influence. I have not had enough by far of what I deserve.
“And you trust Calvin will give you that power? Even if that means he would have to sacrifice some of the power himself? He’s not generous, father. You know that.”
“Well, I’d have a far better shot with him on the throne than Grayson, wouldn’t I? Especially once he fathers a grandchild for me.”
To bring a child into this game of theirs made me feel unwell. That baby would be nothing more than a bargaining chip. Would they even be loved? Or just shown off, used for influence and power, to whoever could give them the most in return.
“You will tell everyone of Grayson’s evil plans, and then Calvin will have a clear path to the throne,” my father said.
“I will not speak those lies,” I said.
