‘Grayson’s POV

While I had no idea what the Gamma was truly up to, I could guess he intended to manipulate Lillian and attempt to use her against me again. For both her sake and my own, I was bound and determined to keep that from happening. If that meant I had to travel out to their small pack and attend a ceremony I cared nothing about, then so be it.

I was being entirely pragmatic. My commitment to seeing this through had nothing to do with the way my chest became tight whenever I thought of Lillian there on her own, in danger again.

If the engagement party was for Maren, who was engaged to Calvin, then Calvin was sure to be there. I didn’t want Lillian anywhere near that asshole without my being there to intervene should the need arise.

But my concern for protecting my own interests was most important. At least, that was what I told myself, to help convince myself that I cared nothing for Laila.

I packed my bags as Lillian did, made arrangements to be away. Prime Beta and I discussed different versions of events that could happen, and what he should do if that came to pass, as well as how to reach me at all times.

Everything seemed to be iron-clad.

The morning we were set to leave, Prime Beta came to the door.

“The luggage is here,” I said gesturing toward the bed, where Lillian and my suitcases were stacked.

“Unfortunately, that’s not why I’m here,” Beta said.

“What is it?” I asked.

“The Council of Elders wish to speak with you,” Beta said. “An impromptu meeting, but an important one.”

“That’s what they said?” I asked. “Before or after they learned I would be going out of town?”

Beta’s face was hard, and I had my answer.

“What’s going on?” Lillian asked from behind me. “Is everything okay?”

I already suspected they would do whatever they could to keep me from going on this trip, but I wasn’t willing to break that news to Lillian yet. She cared so much for her brother, and if I denied her going to find his antidote, even inside the belly of the beast, she would react poorly.

Instead, I hoped that I would be able to convince the Elders that there was no reason to keep me here.

“The Council of Elders just want to have a quick meeting,” I told her. “I’ll be back soon.”

“We were going to leave…”

“It shouldn’t take long,” I told her. I hoped.

Her mouth pressed hard together, something I noticed she did when she didn’t like what I was saying but was holding her tongue. I found the pouty face somewhat… endearing. But I wouldn’t admit that even under threat of

torture.

Not acknowledging her anymore, I grabbed my cane, turned, and walked out of the room with Beta, who led me down to the meeting room where the Council was waiting.

“Good luck,” Beta whispered under his breath as I entered the room.

The Council of Elders were mostly seated, their chairs in a kind of U-shape, all facing the door. Only the Head Elder was standing, his back to the room, looking out the window.

Using my cane, I walked into the room.

“Prince Grayson,” said one of the members, an older man with a shaggy beard. All of these men were the oldest and most prominent werewolves in the pack. They held high regard, high influence. Talking with them was always exhausting. “We’ve heard that you were planning on leaving the pack.”

“Just for a few days,” I said. “The Gamma is holding an engagement ceremony for his daughter and the future Alpha of that pack, Calvin.”

“You have no reason to attend that event,” said another.

Before I could react coldly, a third spoke up, “Your duties should be to your pack here. We have many challenges that require the presence of the future-King.”

“I am aware of no problem that cannot wait for the three days I will be gone,” I said.

“You must stay,” said another.

Finally the Head Elder cleared his throat and slowly turned. “The sharks are in the water, scenting blood, Prince Grayson. Without your presence here, they will come closer to what you hold dear.”

“This isn’t a threat,” I said. If it was, I would put them in their place.

“A warning, from what we’ve all seen. Your influence in the pack has waned during your time in the coma. You must know that there is more than one hopeful trying to claim the title of heir out from under you.”

“Our favor goes a long way,” said another member.

“We can help you, but not if you are gone,” said a third.

“You need to be here to advocate for yourself, or our words will fall on deaf ears.”

“You must do what you can to hold influence,” the Head member said. “Or you will everything.”

I bit back my growl – just barely – knowing what they intended here. If I went with Lily, I could lose my claim to the throne.

Inwardly, I cursed.

“You can’t come?” Lillian asked me. The bags were already gone, being loaded into the car. Lillian herself was in her coat and shoes, ready to go.

“No,” I said, hating this feeling of confinement. I had finally come alive again only to find myself in more chains. “And I think you should stay as well.”

“I can’t,” she said. “You know why I can’t. Ronan doesn’t have time.”

I clenched my jaw. For her safety, I wanted to hold her back, but… her eyes were so pleading, so hopeful, so everything, that I lacked the ability to tell her no.

“Stay in contact with me,” he said. “I want to know when you arrive, when you wake up, when you go to bed. I want this for your safety. If I do not hear from you, if anything sounds abnormal, I will come and get you, regardless of what the Council wants from me.”

I resisted an urge to touch her. My promise to come to her would have to be enough. But I had to clench my fists to hold myself back.

She swallowed hard, and nodded. Coming closer to me, toward the door I stood in front of. She stopped in front of me. Then, carefully, slowly like I might pull away, she leaned up and pressed a soft kiss to my cheek.

“Thank you,” she said.

I wanted to grab her, to kiss her properly, but I didn’t. I held back. I let her slip past me and out into the hallway.

I didn’t stop her, didn’t hold her, didn’t kiss her. All three things I wanted to do.

Lillian’s POV

I sat in the car alone, dreading what was to come. This would have been so much easier with Grayson with me, but I could tell from his tension that he had no choice but to stay. Just like I had no choice but to go.

Ronan needed that antidote, and to get it, I would have to deal with my father. e

I stared out the window, wondering what fate would await me there.

Before long, we arrived.

One of the Gamma’s guards opened the door to my car and I stepped out. The minute I did, my father called out.

“Welcome home, Lillian. You’ll never leave us again.”

My arm was grabbed roughly by one of the guards.
