Chapter 108

Lillian’s POV

“What do you want, Maren?” I asked flatly.

Maren pouted, but it was false, directly conflicting with the delight sparkling in her eyes. “Is that any way to treat a concerned sister who came to visit you? Maybe I missed you.”

“We just saw each other at the palace,” I said. “And you’ve never treated me sisterly for my entire life. Why would I think that you intended to start now?”

“New starts could be in order. This feels like the time for new beginnings.” She raised a hand and placed it to her

stomach.

“If that’s true, then let me out of here. Let me go.”

She shrugged. “That’s between you and father. I overheard your conversation. You had your chance to please him and you failed.”

“You overheard. So you know what our father and Calvin are planning,” I said. I approached her, ready to plead if I had to. Maren and I had never shared anything close to sisterly love, but I still believed her to be a woman of some sense. She had to see how badly the kingdom would suffer if Calvin was on the throne.

“I do,” she said, her lips quirking upward into a smug grin. “Calvin always kept you in the dark, but he tells me everything. Does that hurt you, Lillian? To know that the man you once loved never actually cared for you?”

At one point, it would have hurt. But not any longer. I knew the kind of man Calvin was now, and I knew I was better off without him in my life.

“So you approve of their plan?” I asked.

“It’s not my place to say,” Maren said. “A wife doesn’t question her husband. A mate trusts their mate.”

I looked at her neck but didn’t see a mark. At once, she covered the back of her neck with her hand as if to hide it.

“A wife’s duty is only to keep the home. And…” Her hands dropped back to her stomach. “To provide heirs.”

“You are pregnant,” I said.

“Yes.” She looked at me like she expected something. “And before you, too. That won’t look good for the prince, will it? But Calvin just can’t keep his hands off of me. This was bound to happen. Your bedroom must be so cold.”

My bedroom simmered with potential. When Grayson and I had come together, it had absolutely ignited,

None of which was any of Maren’s business.

“Congratulations,” I said blandly.

“I’m going to make Calvin so happy,” she said.

My mind slipped to Ivory, to Calvin pulling her into the room to kiss her, of her covering her belly in much the same way that Maren was now. Calvin was playing both of these women, and who knew however many else, just like he had done to me.

He didn’t care about any of them.

“Calvin isn’t faithful,” I said.

“You don’t know what you are talking about.”

“There’s a maid in the palace. I saw them kissing.

“You are lying.”

“I confronted her. She said he promised to run away together.”

Her eyes turned sharp, her smile fell totally off her face. “Calvin. Run away with a maid? You don’t know him at all. He wouldn’t even dirty himself with someone so lowborn.”

The words were harsh, but I saw the way she stilled and the doubt that filled her eyes.

“You aren’t stupid, Maren,” I said. “I’m sure you notice the hours he’s missing. The lies he tells.”

“I won’t listen to this. T-to your lies. I came here to make peace with you and share my good news, but you don’ care. There is a problem in this family, Lily, but it’s always been you.”

She didn’t stay to hear more. Instead, she turned around and slammed the door behind her. The lock turned, trapping me inside.
