She remained silent for several seconds before finally speaking. "I... I can take excellent care of her. She can come stay at my place."
"Do you honestly think I'd agree to that?" he retorted. "Either I find someone else, or you agree and move in with us."
That effectively shut her down.
"I guess your affection for her isn't that deep after all," he remarked.
She pressed her lips together and didn't argue.
She adored the little girl, and she didn't need to prove anything to him.
But moving in with him crossed a boundary she couldn't handle.
He didn't push the issue.
If she wouldn't agree, he wasn't going to force her.
He was perfectly capable of taking care of his daughter himself.
Neither of them brought it up again.
As 5 PM rolled around, Cecil called her.
He simply said, "Come down."
Taken aback, she eventually replied, "Alright."
She turned to Edmond. "I need to step out for a bit."
He didn't ask questions; he merely nodded.
She headed downstairs and entered Cecil's room.
He was packed and ready. She was originally supposed to help him check out this afternoon.
But before she could even show up, he had caught wind of what happened to Edmond.
The moment she walked in, he blew up at her. "What the hell happened? Do you have a death wish?"
She had immediately sensed something was wrong from his tone on the phone.
Setting her bag down, she asked, "What's wrong?"
"What's wrong? How did he end up getting stabbed?" He scowled. "Are you hurt?"
"I'm fine."
She gave him a brief rundown of the incident.
