The restaurant Edmond had selected for tonight specialized in premium seafood.
Refusing table service, he grabbed the crab crackers himself and began prepping the food for the woman and the child.
Sheila's attention was entirely focused on Tilly. Even though Edmond had told her not to hand-feed the girl, she still needed to keep an eye on her while she ate.
Between managing Tilly's plate and cleaning up, she barely ate anything herself.
When Edmond dropped a perfectly shelled piece of lobster meat into her bowl, she looked down, picked it up on reflex, and transferred it to Tilly's plate.
"Eat your own food," Edmond commanded. "She can't eat all of that."
"I can do it myself," she protested. "Let me crack one."
"The shells are tough. You won't be able to cut through them."
"Doesn't this fall under my job description?"
"You look after Tilly," he replied smoothly. "I'll handle this."
In other words, she was just reaping the benefits of Tilly's presence.
If it weren't for the little girl, Edmond certainly wouldn't be waiting on her hand and foot.
Fine.
She diverted all her energy back to the child.
Her original plan had been to minimize her contact with him as much as possible, even while working as his live-in assistant.
With Tilly here, it was the perfect buffer so she didn't have to face him directly.
Tilly was just a toddler. Though she was easily distracted, her stomach was tiny, and it didn't take long for her to get full.
Sheila didn't have much of an appetite either, and between wrangling the kid and picking at her food, she was mostly done.
Before she could put her fork down, Edmond dropped a freshly extracted piece of crab meat right onto her plate. "Eat a little more."
"I'm full."
"I went through the trouble of cracking this crab by hand, and you won't even give me the dignity of eating it?" His expression darkened. "Are you really that high maintenance?"
"No one asked you to crack it..." she muttered under her breath.
"What did you say?"
Deciding it was better to play it safe, she quickly picked up her fork. "I'll eat it."
Tilly, who was completely full, looked back and forth between Edmond and Sheila.
"Does the pretty lady like shrimp?" she chimed in.
