Still You Still Me Still Falling novel Chapter 24

Sheila pulled up Yvaine Marin's number and dialed.

Yvaine was her best friend. Years ago, Yvaine had interned at Edmond's company.

It was only through visiting Yvaine that Sheila had met Edmond and their paths had crossed.

After Sheila and Edmond broke up, Yvaine quit her job there.

She was now working as a high school teacher.

No one picked up. She was probably in the middle of a class.

Sheila sent her a quick text.

Half an hour later, Yvaine called her back.

She cut straight to the chase. "Sheila, did you say Edmond invested in your lab's project? Does he know you work there?"

"He knows. We... ran into each other," Sheila admitted.

"Holy shit!" Yvaine cursed loudly. "That absolute bastard! What is he playing at?"

"I have no idea," Sheila said softly. "Maybe he really just thinks our project has potential, but my gut tells me something is wrong..."

"Don't stress. I'll go ask Dante Spencer," Yvaine offered.

Dante Spencer was Edmond's special assistant and had once actively pursued Yvaine.

"Yvaine, please don't go out of your way," Sheila interjected. "I only called because I wanted his contact info."

She refused to put her best friend in an awkward position.

She would track Dante down herself.

"I'm already on it," Yvaine insisted. "Don't worry about it."

They hung up, but it wasn't until the next day that Yvaine finally reached out again.

As soon as the call connected, she sighed. "Sheila, Dante just got back to me. I'm sorry..."

"You don't need to apologize to me," Sheila reassured her quickly.

"He said the investment was the boss's decision. Other than that, he doesn't know anything."

"Alright. I'll figure something else out."

Yvaine sounded anxious. "Sheila, I highly doubt Edmond is funding your lab out of the goodness of his heart. Just like you said, I don't feel good about this. Why don't you talk to Professor Preston and just back out of the project?"

She trailed off, already knowing it was impossible.

The project was York's life's work and Sheila's emotional anchor.
