Even without her aunt in the picture, Sheila would have treated Clarence with the utmost respect for Simon's sake.
She nodded. "Whatever you need, if it's within my power, I won't say no."
"That's all I need to hear, Sheila," Clarence said. "It's actually quite simple. Mr. Ladd's company took on a project that's run into some trouble, and if he's not careful, he's looking at bankruptcy."
Sheila frowned in confusion. "But I don't know the first thing about business..."
"You don't need to," Lanny interjected. "Clarence mentioned you're acquainted with Edmond Halley, the CEO of Vantage Group?"
A sudden, loud ringing echoed in Sheila's ears.
"I saw the two of you chatting the other day," Clarence explained. "I never would have guessed you knew someone like him. All Mr. Ladd needs is for you to make an introduction—just act as a middleman. You won't have to worry about anything else."
"Exactly," Lanny agreed. "Just set up a dinner so we can meet. I'll handle the rest myself. What do you say, Sheila?"
Clarence looked at her intently. "For you, it's a tiny favor. But for us... Edmond Halley is completely out of reach. Regular guys like us don't get the chance to rub shoulders with men like him."
Sheila's grip on her silverware tightened until her knuckles turned white.
"Sheila?" Clarence prompted gently.
Snapping back to reality, she forced a stiff smile.
"Is this putting you in a difficult position?" Clarence asked. "We really just need an introduction. Mr. Ladd saved my life years ago, and I've always wanted to do something to repay him..."
"Don't say that, Clarence," Lanny chimed in. "I didn't help you back then expecting a reward."
He turned back to Sheila. "If this is too much for you, let's just forget it. Whatever happens, happens. If I go bankrupt, then that's just the hand I've been dealt."
"Don't talk like that!" Clarence quickly intervened. "Don't worry, I know Sheila will help us out."
He looked at her again. "Right, Sheila?"
