Rowan was equally perplexed. "Waylon is a fugitive overseas right now, barely able to fend for himself. Taking a child is completely useless to him... What exactly is he plotting?"
The heavy atmosphere in the office was suddenly broken by a ringing cell phone. Rowan picked it up to hear Victoria's gentle voice on the other end, telling them to bring Pip back to the Jameson Residence for dinner.
Rowan replied calmly, "Mom, we won't make it today. We're planning to visit Delilah. She hasn't seen Pip in a while and misses him terribly."
Victoria laughed warmly on the other end. "Alright then. Bring the baby over for dinner tomorrow. Your father and I are both dying to see him."
"Will do. We'll be there right on time tomorrow."
Rowan hung up and casually tossed the phone onto the corner of his desk. Lyra sat with her eyes cast down, her brows furrowed tight. Her mind spun with thoughts of Waylon and Kayla, leaving her in a dazed trance.
Rowan cupped her cool cheeks and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. "He's trapped overseas; he can't make any waves. Stop worrying. Let's pack up this evening and take Pip to Fairchild Manor for dinner."
Lyra steadied her nerves and nodded. She instructed Andrea to pack Pip's baby supplies and food. Once Rowan finished his work, the two of them swung by Blackwood Manor to pick up their son before heading out.
As dusk settled, the dining table was laden with steaming food. Daniel Harrington happened to be at the dinner as well. He and Caleb got along famously, and their friendship ran deep. Playing the enthusiastic host, Caleb kept adding food to Daniel's plate and making lively conversation, ensuring his guest was well taken care of. In contrast, he dropped all the polite formalities with his brother-in-law, Rowan.
After dinner, the atmosphere in the living room was relaxed. Daniel bent down to tease the twins as they toddled across the floor, joking with a laugh, "That boy's eyes and expressions are a carbon copy of Caleb, while Hazel looks exactly like Lyra. Kayla, it seems you were just the delivery vessel."
Everyone chuckled, except Kayla. Her heart was in knots, and she couldn't muster a single smile. The words went in one ear and out the other, failing to register at all.
She couldn't distinguish whether her insistence on divorce stemmed from a sense of duty toward this 'past life connection' Waylon had sold her, pity for his current miserable state, or if she had simply lost her mind entirely.
Her thoughts were a tangled mess. Since Lyra wanted to talk, Kayla didn't object.
While Caleb went to see Daniel out, Delilah retired to bed. Pip was sent back to Blackwood Manor with Andrea, leaving only the three of them in the living room. Rowan looked at the distressed Kayla, his tone icy. "Bring the phone you use to contact Waylon. We're going to video call him right now."
Kayla instinctively shrank back, frowning defensively. "How could I dare do that? What if you instantly track his location and send someone to kill him?"
Rowan shot her a glacial glare, his aura sharp and oppressive. "What happens next will likely shatter everything you think you know. Bring the phone out and ask Waylon exactly what I tell you to ask."
