The man was still standing in the driveway, tall and unyielding. The morning sun cast a golden halo over his broad shoulders, making him look as captivatingly handsome as ever.
As if sensing her gaze, he raised his hand in a final wave toward the departing vehicle.
Time flew by. Lyra and her entourage traveled all over the country. They hiked The Great Wall, explored The Forbidden City, and marveled at the dazzling lantern displays in the Riverside Landscape Garden. They even rode camels across the sweeping dunes of the desert. The only thing hotter than the scorching sand was the exhilarating taste of absolute freedom.
At first, Lyra made sure to video call Rowan regularly, but as the trip wore on, she got too caught up in the adventure and eventually stopped bothering.
Maddie and Sabrina even flew out to join them for a while. It was through Maddie that Lyra learned the Jameson Tech Tower was officially relocating. Rowan was completely swamped with the monumental transition.
After spending a few fun-filled days together, the Vance sisters headed back to Seaborne City. Lyra's crew was scheduled to leave for The African Savanna the following week to witness the great animal migration.
Before their international departure, they spent a leisurely afternoon wandering through a quaint, historic town in Aethelburg. They stopped at a rustic little cafe to enjoy some afternoon tea. Shortly after they sat down, a strange, inexplicable feeling suddenly washed over Lyra.
She glanced around the bustling shop. It was packed with locals and tourists alike, likely drawn by the holiday weekend. The air was filled with a mix of different accents and the relaxed, joyous laughter of vacationers.
Her eyes skimmed past the sea of unfamiliar faces until they landed on someone who made her heart skip a beat.
The strikingly handsome face seemed to pierce through the void, like a faded black-and-white photograph suddenly blooming into vibrant color. He was undeniably gorgeous, with sharp brows, striking eyes, and a faint, alluring beauty mark near the corner of his eye. He looked exactly as she remembered him from her past life.
Lyra parted her lips, but no sound came out.
Their gazes met across the crowded room, and the man offered a faint, knowing smirk.
He strolled over to their table and pulled up the chair directly behind hers. When a waitress scurried over to take his order, his clear, resonant voice carried over the din. "Just a glass of water, please."
"Mom, I want this one! And this one!" Pip's sweet, demanding little voice shattered the trance, pointing eagerly at the pastries on the table.
"Okay," Lyra whispered gently.
She quietly transferred the treats onto her son's plate. Mrs. Whittaker chimed in, scooping up some candied dates for the boy, while Andrea casually lifted her coffee cup, her sharp eyes darting toward the man sitting behind them.
The tall, imposing man didn't stay long.
