Before setting off, Lyra stocked up on some essential cold and cough medicines for Pip.
Navigating doctors while traveling was always a hassle, so it was better to be safe than sorry. At Rowan's parents' request, they were starting their trip domestically, waiting until Pip adjusted to life on the road before heading overseas. Lyra had agreed to the plan. However, on the morning of their departure, Rowan was nowhere to be found.
Lyra tried calling him, but it went straight to voicemail. Sighing, she dialed Wesley Wade instead.
"When you see him, let him know I'm bringing Mrs. Whittaker with us," Lyra said into the phone. "Pip is still little, and since we'll be staying in vacation rentals, having her cook will take a lot off my plate."
Beside her, Mrs. Whittaker nodded enthusiastically. As a live-in nanny and cook, she was thrilled at the prospect of traveling—in fact, she had been the one to suggest tagging along right before they started packing.
"Of course, Mrs. Jameson. But Mr. Jameson isn't in the office right now... I'll let him know as soon as he gets back."
Lyra tapped her fingertips against the back of her phone, a quiet wave of disappointment washing over her. He wasn't there.
They were about to leave for a massive trip, and he couldn't even manage to see them off? Was he really that swamped?
"Alright," Lyra murmured, her eyelashes fluttering down as she ended the call.
Mrs. Whittaker double-checked the luggage while Blake and Will loaded the suitcases into the trunk of the SUV.
Lyra was just about to duck into the back seat when a sleek black car pulled up to the driveway. Rowan had made it.
"Dad!" Pip's eyes lit up the moment he spotted the familiar figure, and he cheered in absolute delight.
Rowan strode over, scooping the boy into his arms and pressing a firm kiss to his cheek. "You make sure you listen to your mom while you're out there, okay?"
"I will!" Pip giggled, nodding vigorously.
Rowan's voice softened. "Where do you want to go the most, Pip?"
Tilting his little head up, Pip answered brightly, "The Great Wall!"
A faint smile tugged at the corners of Rowan's mouth. "...Okay."
