Lyra rode in the car toward Jameson Group. Halfway there, Andrea Nash called Wesley Wade and was informed that the boss was working at Jameson Tech today.
When Lyra arrived at the top-floor office of the tech building, Joel Hunter and the others were still inside discussing a new project. Hearing footsteps at the door, they instinctively looked up. Seeing it was Lyra, they immediately stopped their conversation and stood up crisply to greet her.
They were no longer strangers to Mrs. Jameson. When Mr. Jameson had been injured, Lyra frequently visited the company to coordinate affairs and handle various trivial matters on his behalf. The veterans on the team were already well-acquainted with her, shedding the stiff formality of their initial meetings.
Joel bowed slightly, his tone respectful. "Mrs. Jameson, you're here."
"Mrs. Jameson."
Gabriel Grant and the others greeted Lyra as they backed out of the room.
Lyra nodded.
Wesley was the last to leave. As he closed the door, he saw Lyra walk straight up and wrap her arms tightly around Rowan's waist without saying a word.
After shutting the door, Wesley's thoughts drifted back to the construction site accident last year. The blood on Mr. Jameson's head hadn't even amounted to the nosebleed Wesley had once suffered. By sheer luck, he hadn't been directly hit by the falling steel frame; he had merely injured his leg. Yet, Mr. Jameson had deliberately instructed the doctors to tell his family that resuscitation efforts had failed, just to see his wife's reaction.
When Victoria and Lyra found out he was lying, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law had marched right up to his hospital bed and slapped him on both sides of his face, hitting him so hard he got a nosebleed.
Though he hadn't been crushed, his leg injury kept him hospitalized for a month. Rowan even used the recovery period as an excuse to schedule a minor, private surgery.
"What's wrong?" Rowan asked inside the office, holding Lyra and gently stroking her long hair.
Lyra's voice trembled with a lingering panic. "Kayla wants to divorce Caleb... She said that in her past life, she eventually became Waylon's wife, and that I tricked her."
She buried her face in his chest, her tone utterly lost. "I didn't know. I swear I didn't know."
"She was probably long dead," Rowan said coldly.
He pulled his thoughts back to the present and asked in a low, serious voice, "What else did Kayla tell you?"
Lyra's voice tightened as she repeated, "She said she doesn't want a single cent in the divorce. She's willing to walk away with nothing, but she wants to take one of the twins."
Rowan instantly pinpointed the core of the issue. "Since Kayla won't walk away with any substantial assets, why does Waylon still want to take her away? Could it be that he doesn't want money, but the child?"
"Did Kayla mention which child she wanted to take?"
The question drained the color from Lyra's face. A sudden chill crept up her spine. She shook her head frantically, her voice trembling. "I don't know. She didn't say."
