When it was time to leave, Lyra settled Pip into his car seat first.
Rowan was just about to follow her into the car when Victoria called out to him, stopping him at the bottom of the estate's grand staircase.
The soft, amber glow of the porch lights cast long shadows in the direction his wife and son had gone. Rowan kept his voice calm and low as he tried to reassure his mother. "It's only for a year."
"By the time Pip gets back from traveling, he'll be old enough to start kindergarten. Once school ties him down, he won't ever have the chance to just travel the world freely again."
Victoria frowned deeply. It was just kindergarten. Surely that wouldn't lock her grandson away forever. She could hear exactly what her son was doing—making excuses to justify Lyra's reckless behavior.
"But if she leaves now, she's going to miss your thirtieth birthday. And the grand opening of the Jameson Tech Tower. How can she not be by your side for such massive milestones? What are people going to say about our family..."
"It doesn't matter," Rowan said evenly, absentmindedly adjusting his silver cufflink.
Victoria felt that her son had reduced himself to begging for scraps in this marriage.
"Do you want me to talk to Lyra? She's not an unreasonable girl, I'm sure I could—"
"No," Rowan interrupted, turning away. "Don't get involved. Just focus on yourself and Dad. That's enough."
He gave a dismissive wave. "I'm heading out."
Victoria wanted to argue, but Charles stepped out of his study and called out to her sternly. "They're adults, Victoria. They are parents now. Let them handle their own lives."
Victoria sighed in defeat, standing perfectly still as she watched her son walk to the car.
The night air was crisp, and the silver moonlight washed over the courtyard. Inside the car, Pip had already fallen fast asleep against Lyra.
As Rowan slid into the driver's seat, Lyra stared at his broad shoulders. There was a heavy, lingering loneliness radiating from him.
He had finally gotten what he wanted. Yet, for some reason, he still looked completely hollow.
Lyra frowned. "That day at the prison... you were there, weren't you? You heard everything about the Sterling family..."
