Charles Jameson walked through the door and immediately spotted his grandson. Handing his briefcase to the staff, he smiled warmly. "Don't wait for me to eat when the boy is here. Go ahead and start without me."
Saying that, Charles walked over to pat Pip's head and motioned for Lyra and Maisie to follow. "Let's all sit down."
Before they took their seats, Charles specifically asked the staff to move the high chair right next to him.
The dinner started out cheerful and lighthearted, but then Charles suddenly turned to Lyra. "Lyra, how come I never see you wearing your wedding ring?"
Lyra instinctively glanced at Rowan's hand. His long, elegant fingers were bare of everything except the heavy wedding band he faithfully wore.
Her own fingers were completely empty.
The realization hit her.
Rowan always wore his, but she had taken hers off the very day after their wedding, tossing it into a drawer where it hadn't seen the light of day since.
"I..." Lyra stammered, realizing how careless she had been about these details.
Rowan had never once demanded she wear it.
Seeing her struggle, Rowan effortlessly stepped in. "The diamond on Lyra's ring is too large. She almost scratched Pip's face while holding him one day, so she stopped wearing it around the house."
His tone was perfectly casual, as if they were just making idle small talk.
Victoria nodded in immediate understanding. "Well, Rowan, that's your fault then. You need to buy Lyra a simple plain band for everyday wear."
"Exactly! There are so many gorgeous plain bands these days. Look at mine, it's totally smooth..." Maisie held up her hands, showing off the rings sparkling on nearly every finger.
Rowan glanced at it.
He thought about pulling out his phone right then to text his jeweler, but decided against it, simply placing his phone face-down on the table instead.
The warm atmosphere resumed. During the casual chatter, Charles brought up the recent news of the Sterling family's bankruptcy. As he finished his sentence, his gaze locked directly onto Rowan, his tone probing. "Was that your doing?"
Lyra frowned, trying to remember which Sterling family he meant.
Then it clicked.
It was *that* Sterling family.
